 mouthpiece and reed question
Author: AAAClarinet

so i've read here about professional players who get great sound even when using a "soft" reed on a close mouthpiece. just wondering if they are still able to project over a large orchestra with that type of setup. i use a .96 opening and now think i would like to try slightly softer reeds but wonder if it will effect projection. thanks for any help, i really appreciate this board.

A lot depends on the particular mouthpiece. I find that if I go to a somewhat softer reed I can have a lot of flexibility and color, but need to just let my air and set up do the work. Be sure not to bite. Often folks try to muscle it too much.

It will depend on just how soft you go. There is a balance with any mouthpiece, reed and ligature combination.

I think there is a practical limit to that scenario. I just went down once again in facing to an old Combs LC 1 sitting in my drawer. I can get a very big sound that projects just fine, but I am using Vandoren Rue Lepic #4s on it.

A mouthpiece less than 1mm in opening seems a bit closed even for the die hard Cheddeville players out there. HOWEVER........ YOU must determine if the end result is acceptable. If it works for you, it doesn't matter if you're blowing through the wide end of the clarinet.

It mostly depends on the player, some can and some can't. A professional player uses what makes them sound the best or they would be using something else. If they can't project than they wouldn't last very long in their position. So the answer is yes for those that use a close MP with a soft reed. I'm not aware of anyone that does that but I'm sure there are some.
