I wonder whether Patrick Hanudel is a member here, or whether anyone knows him or has heard him play. He's the clarinet/saxophone reviewer for American Record Guide, and his bio is at http://www.americanrecordguide.com/critics.html.
I ask because he dislikes almost every clarinet recording and even diagnoses reed and mouthpiece problems in his reviews. He is particularly down on the English players.
I would like to engage him in a civilized discussion about clarinet tone and style, which I think will be enlightening.

Interesting, why is he down on English players? I wonder what he (would) thinks of my debut disc.

He's a member of the 3ID army band. I met him at the school of music while going for ALC (formerly known as BNCOC) and also at clarinetfest. He performed a piece at clarinetfest so if you still have the book there may be a bio or contact information for him there if you're trying to reach him.
Otherwise, Ken, if you want you can email me your contact info and I'll shoot an email over to him inviting him to contact you to discuss his thoughts on clarinetists. Can't guarantee he will, but I can certainly let him know.

Thank you for recommending me for clarinet repairs. Always nice to hear from you (even if indirectly).

Hello Ken,
Been a long time since I checked our message board. But when I saw your post on Patrick Hanudel I wanted to respond. We have him on our gains roster to come to the Army Ground Forces Band stationed here at Ft Bragg, NC. We have heard great things about him. He will be a great help to our section here. We are down to just 5 clarinets now.

Just five? You spoiled majcom'ers! Lol.
SSG Agosto, 282nd army band, going down to two clarinets in a few months and one flute next month with no gains on roster yet.... Lol. I know we'll get some eventually though.

Well sure I know Patrick...I'm married to him.
Prior to joining the army bands, Patrick was principal of both the Tucson and Columbus (IN) Symphonies. He's been writing for ARG for six or seven years now, and with me also being a professional clarinetist (Savannah and Augusta Symphonies) I find that I actually agree with 90% of what he writes (not always, but mostly.) and I can shed some light on this thread.
A wide range of CD's cross his desk. When you are selected to be a critic for a magazine, your job is to ya know...critique them. When you listen to Jon Manasse and Sabine Meyer executing their craft so well, it is harder to give someone that puts out an average CD a comparable review..it just doesn't add up. Ken, I'm sure he'd be happy to engage in a conversation with you about his reviews. I told him about this thread and he looks forward to speaking with you. I don't really know if it is possible to message me so I can give you contact information? I don't feel comfortable just putting information out on a public thread.
Jack- The Estep is no Mozart. A lot of what he did on that recording is intentional.
