 LeBlanc Legacy?
Author: EHolla

Hello all,

I have been playing a Buffet E11 for ten years and am in the market for a new instrument. I have found an R13 I liked but would also like to try to the Buffet Festival before deciding.

The music store also had a used LeBlanc Legacy clarinet. I tried it and really liked the dark sound and clear articulation. Because this is a major purchase, I am concerned about the unknown. I don't know much about LeBlanc Legacies and have been unable to find much information about them, other than the fact that they have been discontinued. It seems like a beautiful instrument but I am wondering why there were discontinued and if it is an instrument that would be consistently reliable for many years to come. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thank you!

Emily

The Legacy was one of the clarinets models that was manufactured for Leblanc by Morrie Backun during the mid-2000's. They were discontinued along with all of the other Leblanc/Backun models when the contract between Leblanc and Backun Musical expired in 2010.Backun has since launched his own line of clarinets while Leblanc has sadly been reduced to little more than a brand name for student clarinets under the Conn-Selmer umbrella.

The Legacy is a very high quality instrument (as are all Backun-manufactured clarinets) and I wouldn't hesitate to buy one if the price were right and I liked the way it played.

The Backun designed and manufactured clarinets are excellent, and if you can get one at a good price, I would go for it.

I helped a friend acquire a LeBlanc Symphonie (the Backun-designed one) in the key of A and it's just a fantastic playing clarinet. I recently picked up two of their LB210 Bliss models (also discontinued) for students and despite being only about 1k in cost, play just as well as professional models costing two and three times as much.

The Festival could be a great instrument for you but I would compare it's physical weight to that of the R13. I've found that the R13 Prestige I have is heavier that my R13 such that the R13 is a little more comfortable from a weight point of view. Both are fine instruments. Good luck!

The Legacy is a instrument that used to be sold at 5-7k so if you can get one at 3k(r13 price range) I would take it for sure. The Legacy is discontinued, and so is Symphonie, Cadenza, and Leblanc by BACKUN Bliss, he Bliss line continues under the LEBLANC name(l210 instead of lb210 etc.) The Leblanc Legacy Bb is something of Henri SELMER Privilege, Buffet Tosca/Divine level, so it should be a lot better than the R13, Festival. Anyways all of the clarinets you re looking will be a lot better than the E11 you are currently playing.

Once I had Morrie go over the Leblanc Symphonie I got from another vendor, it was a real gem. A very nice instrument, and the Legacy is the next step above that. hte Legacy used Backun Traditional barrels and has the LH Eb lever. The symphonie used riingless barrels and had no Eb lever key.
