 'New' Mozart Clarinet Concerto
Author: Paula S
Date:   2013-04-08 20:59

I have just bought the music for the Mozart Clarinet Concerto in Eb from Chester Music.

http://www.musicroom.com/se/id_no/01037616/details.html

It has been reconstructed by the British Composer and clarinettist Simon Milton. K268 has sketchy origins and was initially thought to be a violin concerto however Milton believes it was originally conceived as a clarinet concerto.
I am just so happy to have another Mozart Clarinet Concerto to play but in addition to this, Michael Collin's playing is just to die for. Enjoy the links! Simply sublime ;-)

I guess "new" is a relative term. Dieter Klocker recorded a version of this for MDG in 1998 and Oliver Seely has had a midi version and a Finale version on his website for years.

Best regards,

Nice, but there's no way it's by Mozart. It may be by Johann Friedrich Eck. See the notes at http://imslp.org/wiki/Violin_Concerto_in_E-flat_major,_K.268/Anh.C_14.04_%28Mozart,_Wolfgang_Amadeus%29 and the reference to scholarly material at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_compositions_by_Wolfgang_Amadeus_Mozart.

The first movement at IMSLP is totally unlike Mozart, and there are numerous solecisms. Not the Musical Joke, but pretty obvious.

Still, it may be worth doing, even if it's not particularly idiomatic for clarinet.

I had a brief listen to the third movement. To be honest, to me it just doesn't sound like Mozart. As you say, Michael Collins is an excellent player so it is worth a listening.

It doesn´t sound anywhere near as good as Mozart. Mozart had a certain character in every piece he wrote. This falls to the mediocrity (as a composition).

The motivation for calling this piece a new Mozart concerto may have something to do with a bit of general wisdom in the movie-making community: "There's no such thing as bad publicity."
