 Old Couesnon Monopole
Author: gkern

Hopefully Vytas and David Spiegelthal will weigh in on this. I recently bought a Couesnon Monopole from That Auction Site, and it does not seem to have the playing quality I had hoped for. It is not marked Conservatoires, simply Monopole in the emblem, and then Couesnon & Cie A Paris. It is an older model, s/n 10303, with a roller on the Eb key, and an smaller extra pad for the F/C key.

Were the older models not the quality of the later ones?

It's entirely possible that you simply have a dud. A good reputation is no guarantee that a clarinet of a particular model will be a good player.

As Steve notes, a dud is always a possibility. However, make sure that it has been repadded/refurbished appropriately and that you have it set up well with a good mouthpiece and barrel that suits the instrument.

I have an old Couesnon Monopole Conservatoire, and while it showed some potential right out of the box, it wasn't until I spent some additional time and money on it that it really shined.

Good luck!

Nothing to add, I suspect it needs a good tuneup. I've had about six Couesnon Monopole clarinets pass through my hands, with an assortment of keywork 'styles' (i.e. rollers/no rollers, 5 or 6 rings, single or doubled F/C keycups) and all of those played well after thorough overhauls, no duds noted.

I've had a couple of Monopoles, they were both pretty ordinary when I got them, but really sparkled after a repad and overhaul. I bought both of them for peanuts.

Good news - with some tweaking and tinkering (it had already been repadded, I don't know what additional tweaking was done), it now plays and sounds fantastic!
