Question: "What is best mouthpiece for jazz"

Answer: the mouthpiece that best allows you to play jazz.

There are no rules. I currently use a Selmer C85, but have used various Vandorens, Zinners, and other custom models over the years.

Find what works for you.

I contacted (email) two of my favorite jazz players with a similar question and got these responses:

1 - Mitchell Lurie "3" mouthpiece (out of production) with an "ordinary" Rico #2 reed.

2 - Vandoren B45 with a Vandoren V12 3.5 or Vandoren "blue box" 3.5 reed.

Both play R-13's with the stock barrel.

Pretty unremarkable setups and evidence that the second post in this thread is the best advice.

I tried the 5JB and, for me, too much air is wasted (unless I really bite down). No surprise that the little icon on the side of the mouthpiece is a saxophone.

Question: "What is jazz?"

Random Answers:

"We stopped using the word [jazz] in 1943, and we much prefer to call it the American Idiom, or the Music of Freedom of Expression."

---Duke Ellington

"Jazz washes away the dust of every day life."
-- Art Blakey

"Jazz is the big brother of Revolution. Revolution follows it around."

--Miles Davis

"Jazz is what I play for a living."

--Louis Armstrong

"Man, if you have to ask what [jazz] is, you’ll never know."

--Louis Armstrong

"What we play is life."

--Louis Armstrong

"Good jazz is when the leader jumps on the piano, waves his arms, and yells. Fine jazz is when a tenorman lifts his foot in the air. Great jazz is when he heaves a piercing note for 32 bars and collapses on his hands and knees. A pure genius of jazz is manifested when he and the rest of the orchestra runaround the room while the rhythm section grimaces and dances around their instruments."

--Charles Mingus

"I have to admit that more and more lately, the whole idea of jazz as an idiom is one that I’ve completely rejected. I just don’t see it as an idiomatic thing any more…To me, if jazz is anything, it’s a process, and maybe a verb, but it’s not a thing. It’s a form that demands that you bring to it things athat are valuable to you, that are personal to you."

--Pat Metheny

"Jazz is known all over the world as an American musical art form and that’s it. No America, no jazz."

--Art Blakey

"Men have died for this music. You can’t get more serious than that."

--Dizzy Gillespie

"It bugs me when people try to analyze jazz as an intellectual theorem. It’s not. It’s feeling."

--Bill Evans

"Jazz could mean any damn' thing..."

--Sidney Bechet

I've not tried the Beechler #10, but a quick note on the 5jb.

If you're a less experienced player, the 5jb may not be the best as some can find it difficult to get an adequate sound. The B45 would be a better choice as it's a good starter mp and a professional mp (have a listen to the English player, Alan Barnes).

If you're a more experienced player, the 5jb is a beauty when played with softer reeds (e.g. rico reserve 2/2.5) and a more relaxed embouchure. I find its incredible responsiveness allows me to easily move around when playing fast bebop. Benny Goodman played one for a time, as well as Kenny Davern.

Whatever suits you is the best reply. Like a number of UK born clarinettists I use a ROC 5*. Interestingly my late friend Kenny Davern had an influence in the design parameters of the Vandoren 5JB.

Of course the best jazz clarinet mouthpiece won't help much if you don't have a jazz clarinet!

Try to use the same mouthpiece you would use for Mozart and Brahms.

68% of musicians would use a different mouthpiece for Mozart vs Jazz. If you are one of the 32% then use the same mouthpiece. My percentages are drawn from life experience/ imagination and a hat.

Update... Most recent percentages 85% of clarinetists would use the same mouthpiece for Mozart vs Jazz. It's hard enough to find one mouthpiece that you really like let alone two.
