A good number of musicians on this forum care. Given the amount of turmoil in the professional orchestra world recently, the subject is of quite some interest.

"The musicians make an average of $165,000 per year, the third-highest total in the country behind Chicago and Los Angeles." per NBC news

Cost of living makes that not seem like such a high salary. Few places that are more expensive to live than san fransisco.

Median home price is $110,000 in Canton OH and $750,000 in San Francisco.
You do the math.

The math:
The internets, on one site, says that the average Canton, OH symphony orchestra salary is $22,000. If you're going by direct ratio to home price only, the math is as follows:
$165,000/$22,000 = 7.5 times the salary
$750,000/$110,000 = 6.8 times the price of housing
A slight advantage to the SF symphony player, but the ratios are actually pretty comparable.
Another site claims that a Canton, OH symphony orchestra job pays $127,000, SF a mere 1.3 times the pay. That's a completely different ballgame. Still another suggests $78,354, which comes out a little over 2 times the pay for the SF player.
Could we get someone in the know to enlighten us as to which is the accurate salary?
There's also the matter of desirability of housing. "The ability to be located in SF" is a much nicer job perk than "the ability to be located in Canton, OH" in my eyes.

It is a lot of money even considering the cost of living and how far away most of them have to live to buy an affordable house. But, that may be the average salary, which means several of them make 20-25 K less than that. When all's said and done, they are amoung the elite as far as American orchestra's go salary wise. We make half that in Baltimore. We used to make almost a third more then we do now but gave in to a give back contract several years ago. I don't take anything away from the members of the SF symphony, we need to have some orchestra's in this counrty to set the standard. I wish we had 30-40 orchestra's in America making that kind of money, then it would be worth persuing a career in music for all the young people desiring such a thing. The majority of Amereican orchestra's have either lost fnancial ground or remained stagnet in the last five years, lossing to inflation and several smaller one's have folded or been downsized in player numbers.

Before the recent settlement, here's what SF Symphony musicians were making, (quoted from http://www.sfgate.com/default/article/San-Francisco-Symphony-musicians-on-strike-4352408.php
"Under the terms of the previous contract, musicians were guaranteed a base annual salary of $141,700, according to the orchestra management, although the pay for many key musicians can go much higher. Management said the median salary for musicians was just over $160,000. They have 10 weeks of paid vacation each year as well as paid sick leave. "
