 A look back at cane.

I use Legere 2 3/4 and 3 strength reeds. I feel I could go up a strength now, but the next stronger Legere reed is not yet in my possession, so I pulled out some 3 1/2 Vandoren cane reeds to fill in for a while. Tonality and pitch of the cane was improved as I would expect from a stronger reed. The problem was that even though the tip gave improved resistance, the heart or body seemed to collapse on the mouthpiece face even with what I considered to be moderate pressure coming from the bottom half of my embouchure. What I like about Legere is the consistent, uniform and resilient heart of the reed. I think more than every other quality, the heart of Legere reed is strong in relationship to the vibrating tip. Even the 2 3/4 reed has a fuller heart than the Vandoren 3 1/2, and the tip of the cane also seems soggy compared to a Legere of a weaker strength. Also the rougher texture of the cane almost seems irritating compared to the synthetic. I think I'll be happy to return to Legere when the 3 1/4 arrives.

Yeah, on the cane roughness. My smooth Forestones spoiled me; so now I always start by buffing my cane reeds on both sides with 600-grit wet/dry paper.
