 New Clarinet Manual
Author: Taras12

I just got the "Haynes Clarinet Manual" by Stephen Howard from Amazon. It was released early and is a pretty good beginner's care and maintenance manual. Haynes is the British publishing group that does all the Do-it-yourself manuals (I know them from years ago when I used to work on my car. My dad and I actually rebuilt a 1960's Mercedes-Benz 190D diesel engine using a Haynes manual.) Anyway, it's pretty thorough, and explains common care (eg. bore oiling, mouthpiece cleaning, pad care) as well as basic maintenance like spring replacement, repadding, etc. They do most of their work on Hanson and other British clarinets, but the principles cross-over well to my LeBlanc Bliss 310NS. I don't know how many people do their own maintenance, but this book is written in plain Engish (pun intended) and isn't cutesy like the "For Dummies" series.

Stephen Howard, the author of the book, has a really useful and overall amazing website

Here's the link:

You can get a glimpse of some of the articles in the book here. I'm thinking about buying a copy.

I also got it a few days ago. I hadn´t done any advanced clarinet maintenance before I got the book and now I have already cleaned my Bb and A clarinet thoroughly and polished the silver keys.
Next I will change my pads and corks with the instructions of the book. Highly recommended.

ok, below is a "product description" i found on ebay, apparently from a source in Sydney (though they have warehouses in London, Paris and Berlin apparently!)... It reads rather more like an instruction manual...

"Product description"

Clarinet installation steps:
1、A clarinet before assembly, the first tube convergence at the cork evenly coated with cork cream
2, Bb Clarinet - assembly tuning tube on to take over
3, the assembly took over and the bell
4、Took over and completed will be completed in Step 2 to Step 3 take over the assembly together, please ring key and then press and hold on to take over the assembly to avoid damage to the bridge-linked structure
5, assembly the blowing Hau and tuner tube, the inclined plane of the and will blowing the mouth of the with the refers to the hanging and treble key aligned

6、 reed on the mouthpiece of the appropriate location, and carefully-beam trap in pornographic films, not to damage the tip of the pornographic films. Beam ring screws into the appropriate location in the beam circle, hand tighten

[apparently someone finds this offensive, I assume because it has the word "pornographic" in it... this is a "Product description" for a product on Ebay, that appears to be clarinet assembly instructions that were mangled by poor translation. I'm very sorry if you find this offensive, it is not intended in any way to reflect negatively upon the New Clarinet Manual that is the topic of discussion. I also did not intend to mock Chinese speaking people, if that is why the complaintant found it offensive, but it was supposed to originated from an Australian...]

It's important to use "pornographic film" because it results in a sexier tone. This must have translated by a computer from Chinese.

I love Howard's sense of humor. For example, in talking about the importance of mouthpiece hygiene and the germs that lurk after playing:

"It all looks pretty bleak and foul, and yet our streets aren't littered with the decaying corpses of dead musicians."

And then, on the use of lighter fluid on sticky pads:

"I feel duty bound to point out that lighter fluid is highly flammable - so please bear that in mind if you decide it would be a neat idea to ungunk your pads before a blazing log fire. Lighter fluid is also a deeply dangerous and unpleasant drink."

(Disclaimer - I make and sell woodwind use and care products. Stephen was kind enough to send me an autoraphed copy gratis)
I thank Stephen for the kind words and descriptive use of some of Doctor's Products - stricky his evaluations not mine. There is a lot of useful information which is a good primer for all of us that are still learning about good care for our instruments.
