 Evette & Schaeffer Buffet
Author: lmwilkey

How do I know how old, and the value, of my clarinet? The only # on it is B4886, which I cannot seem to find on any lists. I know it was made in France, and is a Modele-Crampon.

Any advice is much appreciated. Thank you!!!

It's probably almost as old as me (which makes it pretty old) but not worth nearly as much (which makes it worth very little). :)

(Probably made in the 1940's - 50s, evidence suggests it may well have been made by Malerne for Buffet, and, on eBay anyway, it's probably worth about $100.)

Best regards,
jnk

Thank you! It's not worth enough to part with....which is what I needed to know. Thanks again!

I think your clarinet might be a student model Buffet. I have a Buffet-Crampon bassoon, modele Evette. It is marked Evette & Schaeffer on the instrument. They made student model bassoons from the 70s to the 80s. Yours could be from around that time also.

"They made student model bassoons from the 70s to the 80s. Yours could be from around that time also."

Actually, no it couldn't. Beginning around 1955, all of Buffet's Evette and Schaeffer clarinets had K-prefix serial numbers. E&S clarinets with B-prefix serial numbers predate that time. The B-prefix instruments are an older design, not nearly as desirable as the K-prefix clarinets, especially those with serial numbers above around K10109 (1961). According to Buffet, E&S clarinets were made in the same factory as professional Buffets. However, Vytas Krass and Susie Ray, both of whom have owned and worked on examples of these instruments, have observed that their design and keywork is identical to Malerne clarinets from the same period. The E&S clarinets, particularly the K-series after 1961, are predecessors to the E13.

BTW, you can find Evette & Schaeffer clarinets dating from the 1930s (or earlier) to the 1980s, when Buffet changed their designation to E13.

Best regards,
jnk
