Sonority, covering bassoon w contra alto
Author: alto gether

I got my contra alto to play bass lines at swing dances, but then I joined the local high school alumni band. No bassoon, so I'm covering bassoon parts and it feels odd to be playing a line two octaves above the bass clarinetist. I'm supposing that the arranger had a specific sound in mind when the bassoon part goes that high, and of course the altissimo of a contra alto sounds different. Is there a better substitute?

Staying within the woodwind choir, high bassoon parts could be played by a tenor sax, a bass clarinet, or, if the part is high enough, an alto sax.

The contra alto would be more effective playing low (2nd) bassoon parts, in my opinion. Hope this helps.
