Hmm... While I think musicians deserve to be compensated appropriately, it's hard to feel too sorry for the SFS players when I look at what our own Detroit Symphony Orchestra's members had to sacrifice to keep the DSO solvent.

A 23% pay cut resulting in a minimum salary of $82,900 for Detroit vs. $141,700 in San Francisco. Granted, the cost of living is much higher in SF, but times are still tough.
We are very fortunate to have such an outstanding orchestra with such talent here in Detroit. It's too bad that we can't afford to even come close to parity with like Orchestras.

Do I understand correctly that the management wasn't trying to cut wages, and that the symphony players just wanted more than 141k/yr including 10 weeks paid vacation?
The article is quite vague regarding the musicians vs. management demands.

Las Vegas: The symphony is "part time" and pays about $10,000 a year.
Spokane: The nominal "core player" earns ~$15,000 a year after confusing the performance venue with the performers.
