 Yamaha YCL 52

Hi everyone,

I recently got a "like-new" Yamaha YCL 52 Bb Clarinet for $150. It's in perfect condition and it plays great. But I would like to know a couple things. Are wooden clarinets supposed to be harder to play than synthetic clarinets? And also, what is the YCL 52 equivalent to the modern Yamaha clarinet models? (Is the YCL 52 equivalent to the modern YCL 450 or YCL 650?)

Thanks! :)

No they are not harder to play - have a tech check for pad leaks.

I think the 52 sits in between the current 450 and 650.

Also, moving from synthetic to wood may require a change in your setup (reed, mouthpiece, ligature).

I'd play safe and insure it for the value of a 650.

My music teacher taught me how to check for pad leaks and everything. So I checked and everything seemed to be fine.

I will definitely try getting a different mouthpiece and ligature.

I got it off of craigslist, and I made sure everything was in great condition.

Can anyone please suggest a good mouthpiece and ligature for an intermediate clarinetist?

A hard to play clarinet usually means a leak. It may not be a pad that is leaking. It could be a tenon cork, register tube, thumb tube, or right through the body.

Mouthpiece: I think a Vandoren B45 is a pretty good place to start. If you're taking lessons, the teacher can help.

I play a Yamaha 450 and didn't like the stock mouthpiece that came with it (4c) so tried a Selmer C85 120. I've found this to be a lot better if that helps.

I'd recommend a Vandoren 5RV Lyre (not the "13" series) or Selmer C85 105 or 110.
