Well, I use silicon carbide abrasive paper #350 or 400 to thin the tip and cannot remember this ever happening. Good luck!

The way I learned how to adjust reeds was to ruin a number of them, learning what NOT to do. It is not so much about what tool you use, but just keep a light touch

That's why I use a knife to scrape the tip. Also, sanding from the under-side keeps this from happening. Hold the tip up to the light every few strokes and beware letting any area get white instead of yellowish.

For the final work, I use 600 grit paper that's almost worn out, followed by a piece of newspaper that's not printed on. Kal Opperman said to use a Postal Service pre-paid post card (the tan/yellow kind with no printing on the back) or a manila folder.
