 Buffet E-11
Author: MGT91123

So I was the music store today and tested a Buffet E-11, and FELL IN LOVE. But I'm confused because the guy at the store said it is an intermediate level horn, but the Buffet website says it's a student model. Which fact is true?
Also, are there any models out there similar to it by Yamaha etc.

The E11 is basically just a silver plated, wooden version of the beginner plastic B12 clarinet, put into a nicer case.

Nothing more, nothing less

Very, very student model.

More like a pretty girl with no brain, but not as fun.

Hi, you should also see my thread about the LeBlanc By Backun Bliss 210 clarinet IMO it's a lot better than the e11, and the e11 France there are in my store, but if you are looking for Yamaha I think a YCL 450, or YCL550AL would suit you fine. On Buffet's side the e12f Mr.Kessler have should also be pretty good. He also mentioned the Antigua Backun which is another excellent "intermediate" level clarinet like the Bliss 210. Anyways IMO the Bliss is actually better than the e11, e11 France, e12f, YCL450, YCL550AL, and Antigua Backun. Not sure about e13 tho, cause there are no e13s in my gigantic Canadian store Cosmo Music( It actually has 2 stories!) Hope this helps!

There are currently two E-11 models available, The E-11 and the E-11 France. The E-11 France is made in France and is a different design inside and out. Some E-11s can play nicely.

Unless the E11 model has changed greatly in the past 20 year or so I think calling one basically a gussied up student horn is being a bit harsh. The mid-'80s E11 I had (made in W. Germany) was definitely better than the plastic, student Yamaha horn I had at the same time. The E11 wasn't spectacular, but it was definitely a step up from my student horn. The tone quality and key work were both superior on the E11 compared to the student horn.

Honestly I think that calling the E11 a fancy student model is more that fair. Student clarinets have advanced a lot in the past couple of decades and as a result the "intermediate" category has more or less disappeared. It is also worth mentioning that the build quality of the E11 (specifically the newer E11 France) has declined significantly and many people now view them unfavorably compared to other clarinets in the same price range for this reason.

Yes,that is my observation as well. R-13 quality has also deteriorated.

The German made E11 is most accurately described as a "Student Wood" clarinet. The term Intermediate really is a product of the US marketting arms of the various companies. Calling the E11 a "student" clarinet would hurt its sales and so calling it "intermediate" helps the mental justification for the price.

The E11 (German) is a better performing clarinet in terms of tone than the student plastic B12, but in terms of response, intonation, ergonomics, & all of the non-tone based aspects, the E11 and B12 are virtually the same.

The "E11 France" was an attempt at making a better "step-up" instrument - i.e. a clarinet that was a more advanced design than the student model. While there was some positive improvements, there were also some negative aspects to the build (that I wont go into as they have already been discussed on the board). The "E11 France" has been Discontinued. It has been replaced by the new E12F and that is a VERY good step-up clarinet. However, at a higher price.

The E12F uses a French Made body with German keywork, assembly & padding (as such they are stamped "Made in Germany" on the back). Many of the positives of the E11 France remain and virtually all of the negative aspects have been fixed and resolved.

Hope that helps!

Interesting. I had heard that the E12F was being released in the US but had not heard that the E11 France was being discontinued. Based on the list price of ~$1660 it appears that the new E12F is now going to be in direct competition with the YCL-650. I've personally held the opinion in the past that the YCL-650 was a better value (and a better instrument) than the E11 France despite being ~$100 more expensive. I'll be interested to see if the situation changes now that it is the Buffet that is slightly more expensive.
