 Clarinet Case/Bag?
Author: orangeclarinet

I'm looking to purchase a new case for my R-13. I like the Altieri bag, but I would also need to purchase a small case for it. Does anyone know of anything that is like both a case and a bag? Or a set/good combination?

I'm hesitant to purchase a Gator or Protec case because they are not large enough to fit music folders in.

Can anyone recommend one that they like? Even if it's just a case, I'd still like to read your reviews.

Get a laptop bag. Cheaper, lasts longer, more useful pockets. Worked for me for the past 10 years and two bags. And that's including multiple trips to Iraq, multiple convoys in humvees, flights on Blackhawks, trips bungee corded to motorcycles, well, lots of wear and tear.

Clarinet specific bags continually dissapointed me. Good quality laptop bags fit a single buffet case, music, reeds, pencils, music notes, my blayman stand, and even my ipad. And has separate compartments for each to keep it all easily organized.

Really depends on what you are wanting to carry, like Alexi stated laptop bags are great. I know several people that are using Laptop backpacks to hold double clarinet cases and give them plenty of additional room.

I currently have Bam double case form my Bb and A and a Ban Trekking for my Bass. Great cases lots of room, but really bulky, especialy when you have to luck both around.

I have used a variant on the above - a Land's End soft side briefcase. It holds my original Buffet Case and is large enough for the big black orchestra issue music folder along with extraneous stuff like like stand and water bottle. Using a briefcase gains you the capacity for a full size folder, but you lose padding and the numerous compartments Alexi mentions above.

I'd never risk carrying a clarinet in a soft-sided case, but I agree with Alexi about putting a small hard case inside a laptop bag. I like those somewhat larger soft-sided briefcases even better -- plenty of room for music, folding music stand, lunch, water bottle and various doodads. Here in the Washington, D.C. area, briefcases and laptop bags, often in excellent condition, sell for next to nothing (US $5 and under) at yard sales and neighborhood flea markets, btw.

I started to look for a bag that would carry both my clarinet and my music which is in one of those typical hard, black folders. The size of the music folder was a problem, I needed at least 17 inches of bag to fit the folder into, not easy. I could not find anything in the “clarinet” style bags from suppliers so I started to look at computer bags.

I found one that looked pretty good, as it turns out, it was perfect! I can put my clarinet (Selmer in it’s original case), reeds, tools, toothbrush, music, both music and instrument stands, plus more into a well made bag. My stand partner has an older Buffet in the original case and it fits perfectly as well. After I got mine and modified it slightly (I didn’t need the straps inside that hold the computer in place) I had quite a few players all asking about where did I get that bag!!

The bag is made by Targus, Targus Blacktop Deluxe 17” Laptop Case w/ Dome Protection CPT401DUS.

I didn’t check the price but it’s worth it, it’s well built, tough, it carries everything and it has lots of pockets to store stuff and it looks nice. I’m pretty sure you can only get them on line but you never know.

I've been using a olive drab Nike messenger bag with great results. Thick nylon, and plenty of space for Buffet hard case, books, stand, reeds, etc...
And...like $15 from TJ Maxx. Hard to beat. My teacher likes it.
