The best advice I can give you is to make sure that you go to a really competent dentist or oral surgeon. I heard horror stories when I was in high school about bad jobs that took a long time to recover from. However, I personally had no problems, but I went to a really good oral surgeon. My wisdoms were badly impacted (I have a small jaw and 2 were actually coming in sideways) and my regular dentist didn't think he could do the job quickly and easily, so he sent me to a specialist. The specialist knocked me out and was done in about 15 minutes!! As I recall, the stitches dissolved within 4-5 days and the area was tender for a few more days after that. I had mine done during summer break, so I wasn't playing quite so much for a while, but I don't remember the oral surgeon telling me that I couldn't practice once the stitches fell out. As far as differences, I didn't really notice any. Hope this helps!

Hi. I had my wisdom teeth taken out 2 years ago, also by a specialist. They had told me that I couldn't play for 1 week. But, being the person I am, couldn't wait that long! I played 2 days after the surgery..... and ended up ripping out the stitched. I wouldn't suggest doing that!!! It hurt for awhile. I think that I was fine by the 4th day. I have had a few problems with my ears since then though. But there is really nothing to worry about.

I got my wisdom teeth out over a summer when I didn't have any performance commitments. I didn't notice any difference in my playing once I got over the surgery, but I didn't even look at my horns for at least a week, and it was a month before I could really play my bass again. I'd recommend you aim for a time when you can ease yourself back into playing over a few weeks instead of resuming your normal practice schedule instantly.

I am 43, I had my wisdom teeth out in '81 because they were interfering cutting my cheeks when I played clarinet, which was a lot then. I think I laid off it for a week. They bled a bit off and on the next day and a half after I had them taken out but after a week I went back. I really did not ask the dentist about how long I should wait.

Every person is different. I think a lot depends on how quickly you heal.

I had three wisdom teeth removed over the summer. My doctor told me i'd be unable to play for about a week and a half. But i was unable to play comfortably for over a month. But everyone is different, the best time is during the summer when you have fewer obligations to play and can still have a month or so to get back in shape before school starts back up.

I had mine out this summer, and all four were impacted BAD. Luckily I had a good oral surgeon, and was able to play in less than a week, but it was a little more than a week before I could play comfortably.

I haven't had my wisdom teeth out, but I do have two good strategies for times when you can't play as much as you'd like: first of all, to keep your embouchure in shape, simpy form it as usual in front of a mirror, without the horn in your mouth. You'd be amazed at how much harder this is, and doing it for even ten to fifteen minutes a day will keep your face in shape. As well, try to learn to practice mentally--I find now that I can look over a score and gain a lot of the benefits of playing through it, especially in terms of fingering evenness. If you can do this, it'll make coming back to what you were working on much easier.
Hope it all goes well for you!

I had my top two wisdom teeth removed about two years ago. The first one snapped off at root level and the dentist had to go searching for the root and scrape it out. That was not a pleasant experience let me tell you. The other came out perfectly and healed within 2 or 3 days. The problem one was still a gaping hole a week after the surgery and it was about two weeks before I could play with any degree of comfort. I have to admit for a while there I didn't think I would ever play again because I couldn't blow, the air just kept escaping goodness knows where. If nothing goes wrong I think you should be playing within a week of the operation (the other posts seem to indicate this as well) but if something goes wrong it may be a bit longer.

A lot of brass players that I know who have had their wisdom teeth taken out have ended up with a slightly darker sound, once they got their chops back.

As a dentist and a clarinet player, I would advise you to get your wisdom teeth out during summer break or when you stay away from playing and rehearsal for at least a week. During the first four days you are more susceptible to getting what is called a "dry socket." I have seen these occur in people who smoke or put a lot of air pressure in their mouth too soon after an extraction, which dislodges the blood clot that is forming over the socket. The result of a dry socket is exposure of the bone around the socket. It is extremely painful and takes a couple of weeks to start feeling more comfortable, plus it means more trips to the dentist or oral surgeon. I was able to play a bit after a week without too much problem. I hope this helps!

I can't match what the dentist above said - he's the expert! I can only tell you what happened to me a few years ago. Believe him when he says to do everything you can to avoid dry sockets. Also keep in mind that not everyone has a smooth and easy situation. Each case is different.

All 4 of my teeth were badly impacted. My oral surgeon very good, but my situation was very bad. The surgery took over 2 hours. I had a long and painful recovery that lasted much longer than the postings above.

The point here is to follow your oral surgeon's or dentist's advice TO THE LETTER for your specific case. Don't try to speed up your recovery and definitely don't do anything to put your recovery at risk. If you have to let a summer go without playing your horn, then so be it. In the long term, you will see that your own health and well being is worth the short term investment in patience.

I can definitely sympathize! I just had my widsom teeth removed last summer before auditions. Not a good time! But anyway...in terms of a practice schedule I didn't touch my instrument until the stitches dissolved. My oral surgeon recommended that I wait so that I don't end up ripping any stitches. Once I began practicing again I didn't over do it. I pretty much just eased my way back into practicing. General rule of thumb...If it hurts STOP!
