 Impossible tremolos?
Author: saxlite

Our band is working on a new piece- "Lauds" by Ron Nelson. It requres two tremolos at the opening, both of which seem unplayable. The first is altissimo E (third line above the staff ) to G# above it. The second is B above the staff to altissimo D. We'll be glad for suggestions as to fingering these difficult tremolos.
Thanks for your help.

For B to D use the open fingering (no fingers - squeaking throat G) for D. I don't have a clarinet handy just now, so I'm not sure about E-G#, but there are so many ways to play G#, there's bound to be a convenient one for this.

For E to G#:

Play the [E6] with the regular fingering

and tremolo to the [G#6] by simply overblowing a [C6].

A C6 overblown will produce a fairly close G#6.

Another way to tremolo [E6] to [G#6] is play the G#6 as:

TR o o o (rh lowest side key) / o o o (Eb)

It's a bit more awkward but not impossible.

Just out of interest, what are the flutes, piccolos and Eb clarinet doing at the same time?

It's typical of band arrangers to think 'it's in the range of the instrument so they can do it' but don't realise it may not be so easy in practice.

Easier B to D: Play B as usual, trill to D by using the top two trill keys -or- trill to D by using your right-hand index finger on the throat A key (resting the bell of your clarinet in your lap, if you need to).

A couple of other options for E to G# if Glenn's doesn't work well for you: Finger the E as usual but use the right-hand C# cluster key as your vent key instead of the right-hand Eb key. Tremolo to G# by putting down either 1 and 3 or 1,2 and 3 of your right hand.

Best regards,
jnk
