Hi,
Anybody with experience or knowledge about the Buffet S-1 model Bb clarinet made in the mid 70's.
Ease of playing, intonation, problems, high points, etc.....
Your help would be appreciated.

I have an S1. Plays a whole lot like my R-13. Same keys, same feel. Perhaps the bore is a little different, but it isn't very different from an R-13.

My daughter borrowed one when she lost a pad from her clarinet right before performing the clarinet transcription of the Cimmarosa Oboe concerto with our orchestra. It was a wonderful horn which is nicer than my vintage R13 (which was out being overhauled at the time). That horn had gorgeous tone and good intonation.

Laura -

When the Buffet S-1 came out about 25 years ago, I tried a couple and did not care for them. They had good intonation and corrected some problems with the R-13, but at the expense, it seemed to me, of being stuffy and dead sounding. Buffet kept them in production for only a short time.

Several S-1s have come up on eBay recently. Is that what you're looking at? It's entirely possible that the S-1 you've found is an excellent instrument. However, I wouldn't buy one without the opportunity to play-test it first.

Best regards.

Ken makes a good point. My S-1 isn't stuffy, but it is a bit harder to blow than my R-13 Bb. But I like to play the S-1 in orchestra because its resistance is about the same as my R-13 A, so I don't have to adjust too much air-wise when switching from one instrument to the other. Thats especially nice in pieces like Brahms 3rd, which requires many changes between the two instruments.

To Date: Received the S-1 Buffet to try. Immaculate shape and plays extremely well. So far very happy with it. Have about 8 more days to try out.
