Hello all!
I have a 197? Buffet Evette Master Model Bb Clarinet that I've been playing on for about six months.
The clarinet itself is great - has great tone and responds well.
However, it's very.. odd smelling. Possibly from sitting in the case for entirely too long, almost smells like rain got to it as well who knows?
Also, some of the metal is tarnished away, and looks almost rusted - mostly along the barrel.
The Clarinet is fully original - except I play on my B45 rather than the Buffet mouthpiece.
Is there anything that can be done to correct this?

The odor is most likely being caused by the case. Old cases frequently have a musty odor and this can transfer to any instrument stored in them. The easiest thing to do would be to simply buy a new case and then thoroughly clean the clarinet before putting it away.
Alternatively you could look into re-lining the old case but this may end up costing just as much as buying a basic new case. I have yet to find a way to "de-funk" an old case without replacing the lining.

If you live somewhere where you have reliable dry weather and bright sunlight, put the opened case out in the sun for a few days. I keep any funky cases I get over the winter months and then put them all out when the hot weather arrives. It seems to fix most smells, but doesn't work too well on a case with tobacco smoke smells. Try Febreze. If you have access to a Dremel tool or similar buff the metalwork with a very light buffing compound. If your comfortable with removing the keys from the clarinet this will make it easier.

I have occasionally dumped some clean cat litter in and closed up the case for a few days. The vacuum out the litter. Also febreeze and fresh air and sunshine.
One other thing to try is to put a well closed envelope of baking soda in the case.
If this a daily player, treat yourself to a new case .

To completely get rid of the smell you may need to change the case and overhaul the clarinet. It depends in part on how strong the smell is. Your sensitivity to the smell will dictate how far you will need to go. I'm very sensitive. If an instrument is really bad I take it outside to start the overhaul.

I am a daily player - about 5 hours a day.
Where am I able to find a new case at a reasonable price? Online or ..?
I'd prefer one with a lot of extra space - for reeds, screwdrivers.. Etc.
The buffet case I have ATM literally has no extra space.

There are lots of online stores that sell new cases reasonably priced. Local band / music stores usually have one or 2 styles as well. I know that the Protec line carries at least 3 different styles of B flat cases. Keep in mind that the more storage, the larger the case. Also watch out for cases that only have storage in a outside pocket. I got one (Protec slimline) that I hate because the stuff in the pocket makes the the case tip over.

Protec makes an ex cellent "Carryall" case that wil accommodate your clarinet and a ton of gear. It comes with carrying handles and shoulder strap. You can order from most online merchants, or obtain at your local emporium.

Thanks for all of y'alls feedback.
I just don't really have a hankerin' for the whole.. "zipped" cases - do they make just regular "snap" cases new? Or is this asking too much?
EDIT: After a little research I figured that the Protec ones are actually pretty nice - leaning toward the Carryall - but I doubt my dad would spend that kind of money on it for me :P

Just as an FYI, I use the Caryall. I have had it fir aboutr 5 years, and it is as good as new. I keep a $200+ Leblanc/Backun Symphonie clarinet, three barrels and several expensive mouthpieces in it all the time.Ya gets what ya pays for.

DEG Music Products makes very nice wood-shell cases with regular latches--they are very similar to the ones that come with Vito clarinets. The Carry-All model runs about $50 and has plenty of room for accessories.

There are always Chinese made box cases being listed on eBay, but fairly often the postage cost is more than the actual case (which is to get around paying commission and PayPal fees). But Chinese cases always tend to smell of petrol for some reason.

I plan on HARASSING my father until he buys me the Protec Carry-All honestly.

Complete repad, key cleaning, bore cleaning and a new case - probably that will get rid of the smell, but no guarantee.
I won't even let mold, nor mildew smelling instruments into my studio. Very sensitive to it.
For right now, clean the barrel sockets. I see new students come in with gunk build up in the sockets that can be nasty.
Your case as mentioned can be most of the smells origination.
