 R13 Prestige or Festival
Author: kuteclar

Is there a technical difference between the R13 Prestige and the R13 Festival? Besides the Festival being available in 440/442 & the Prestige only 440, I don't believe I know of any major differences in the wood, bore size or any other features. Is this a matter of store/regional sales - I thought at one time I heard that a store is only able to sell one or the other. I own a 2006 Prestige, but my student tried a Festival & fell in love with it. Thank you!

You happened to get a good, maybe even an artist quality one. Try many before buy.

I think the physical differences are extremely subtle and you would need specialist guages to identify them.
The Prestiges are I am sure available in 442 as well as 440, its really only a shorter barrel anyway.
As with any model there are fine and average examples in every range so you can only really compare instruments if you have the same level quality of each.

I do know several players who were very fond of their Festivals.

They will both likely need adjustment after purchase, unless you like heavy springs, high rings, tight tenons and some very minor leaks. Both are great!

You can do some searching on the board for when the Festivals were announced. The thinking behind the festival was to create a clarinet that was an "all-around". Not a clarinet focused on classical, or jazz, or contemporary, or whatever. If I remember correctly, it was designed by a few clarinetists who taught at universities who wanted a clarinet that could cover a wide range of styles.

As far as dimensions, once again search, but I remember the biggest thing they changed was moving the register tube slightly closer to the top of the clarinet trying to get a clearer throat Bb.

FWIW, I've played plenty maybe about ten prestiges and abou the same amount of festivals, and I prefer the festival by a long shot. Something about the prestige design, the thumb F and thumb/forefinger E are always flat for me. The Festival tends to be a little more freeblowing and plays great. My "ideal" would be a greenline festival with an upgraded wooden barrel for indoor, and the festival barrel for outdoor.

Yes, they are different. Best to play them both.
