I just got a Van Doreen reed case. What is the black tube for? I just recieved some Peter Ponzel and Rigottti reeds. My initial impression is very good. Anybody out there have any experience with these reeds?

Katfish, if you are referring to the blue Vandoren reed cases, the black tube in the center helps absorb moisture, keeping the reeds from becoming too moist. Moldy reeds are no fun. :-) -- Nate Zeien

I like Rigotti reeds. They sound sweet. Besides they set light, medium, and hard
stiffness level in 1/2 reed strength width. Peter Ponzol was a Buffet Saxohpone
designer, which classic saxophonists now seek. However, I do not have
very good impression about his clarinet reeds as his saxophone and mouthpiece/
neck.

The black particles within holed tube seem mere charcoal. Just like a refrigerator
odour eater. I wonder if they do anything good for reeds.ven in moisturous.

Is the insert charcoal, or that stuff that is put in shoes when you first get them?... you know the little packet of "DO NOT EAT". Silica.. or somethign... I don't remember the name- it's being mass marketed now for craft people to essentially mummify flowers- you put the flower in the stuff and it sucks out all of the moisture relatively quickly. Ahhh.. the ongoing mystery of the black insert.

I've always thought it was this drying stuff... :)

Good Day!

Jo, the white moisture-absorbing crystals you are thinking of are silica gel. And Hiroshi, it is not mere charcoal, but activated charcoal. Activated charcoal is used in everything from water filters to odor-absorbing shoe inserts to remove various ionic chemicals. I don't think activated charcoal is used as a dessicant (moisture-absorbing material).
