In my opinion, the Weber is more "clarinet-y." Spohr was a violinist and I think you'll find his four clarinet concerti sound like they were written by someone with that background. Not to mention, his writing makes them pretty difficult technically.

I feel there's more musical opportunity in the Weber with more clarinet-appropriate technical challenges that are definitely still impressive when played correctly, with excellent rhythm and musicality.

I am thinking about same thing.
I will join a concert competition but i dont know what is better to play, spohr concerto n1, weber concerto n1 or n2.
I think Weber is better to show musicality, i dont know if n1 is "easy" to a concert competition. The spohr is a good piece technically but musically i prefer Weber n2

What do you think?

Short answer Weber; long answer Weber. I hope you have the technique for Spohr so that you can focus on the lyricism of Weber. In my book, you've been given rotten choices: Weber I is far better than Weber II and Spohr should have stuck to the violin.

Did the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra provide a list of acceptable choices? If so, and if your teacher and you have to choose from that list, then my strong instinct would be to choose what seems to be the least attractive option -- the one the judges won't hear forty times because nobody in his or her right mind would choose it. So you choose it. Work had enough to play the walloping whoopus out of it. The judges won't fall asleep from the numbing repetitions. You'll stand out from the herd.

Weber- the Spohr though not particularly "obscure", is not nearly as well known as the Weber.
