I was reading through the Buffet clarinet catalog today and found out that Buffet's intermediate and student model instruments (which would be the E11, E12, E13, B10 & B12) are pitched at (A) 442. Their bass & harmony clarinets are too. Their R13, RC, & Vintage instruments are pitched at (A) 440. They list the Elite as 440/442 so I don't know what's up there.
Anyway, I think that that's the major difference between intermediate and pro, at least in Buffet's case.

Most symphony orchestras have traditionally tuned to A-440 and this is the reason that the "pro" models are marked as such. This does not mean that you could not tune a 442 model to A-440. It could be done with a A-442 by using a sleightly shorter barrell and some adjustment. My older Selmer and Buffet clarinets are A-440 and I have no trouble with the 442 tuning when playing with bands at all.

wouldn't you need a longer barrell? A-442 means it's sharper isn't it? i have a buffet E-11 and it always plays sharp (i have to pull out when i tune ).

My old R-13 (1973) must be tuned to A-442.. i always have to pull out and should probably look to getting a longer barrel. My fear has always been that moisture will collect at the top of the top joint because of the gap from pulling out and cause cracking. Blake

Please keep in mind that a properly designed clarinet is meant to be pulled out a bit in a normal room temperature environment (i.e. 72°F). Otherwise if you were playing in a cool room, you would have no leeway to push in to tune. When you are somewhere that it is even warmer than 72°F, you will need to pull more.

Blake: If the gap is very small moisture will be DRAWN there and STAY there by "capillary forces" - that which causes the moisture to collect in a dish cloth or towel. As the gap increases the capillary forces reduce and the moisture is more likely to not get there, and more likely to flow away. (Like a mesh curtain with big gaps betwen threads is useless for drying something)

I have an R-13 but the other 1st clarinetist in my orchestra has an E-11. That would explain why she always has to pull out her barrel a lot. You learn something new every day.
