Hi all-
I guess this question is directed more towards the people who are familiar with older clarinets and fixing intonation problems. I just received an A clarinet from "one of those auction sites". It has no markings on the upper or lower joints except a "made in france" stamped into the wood along the top edge of the upper joint. The bell says "Maitre". The clarinet came with a cheap plastic barrel that is not a match to the instrument itself. I've attached a 65 and 66 millimeter tosca barrels, and a 66 millimeter chadash buffet barrel and played around with tuning. The upper register A is in tune, but the jump to B goes way sharp, and the next higher C is also sharp. I noticed that it goes in tune if I close the register key (but keep overblowing to get the upper register). It seems that the register key is distorting the notes above A. Another intonation mis-hap is the throat A & Bb, which are horribly flat. Other deviations are a sharp C (lower one), and a flat low F and E. Any ideas?

Just guessing here:
It might be that the upper part of the bore from the bottom of the tuning barrel down to somewhere around the left thumb tonehole is too large. In this case, the clarinet will go sharper and sharper as you move up the clarion from G.
I was able to partially correct for that on a Buffet by using a severely tapered barrel. The bottom of which was considerably smaller than the top of the bore in the upper joint.

It is typically for the twelves to be spread at the bottom of the clarinet. It might be able to be improved to some degree.
