 Eb clarinet barrel length 'standards'

(I searched the archives, but didn't find the specific answer I was looking for; please point me to it if I missed it).

My eefer is a relatively old Bundy. This year, I got a new mouthpiece (Vandoren B44 refaced) and longer barrel for it (Scott 43mm). I find that if I pull the barrel out (and sometimes the bell) about 2mm, that's the best place for the little beast to play relatively in tune with itself. I'm experimenting with Vandoren #3 Eb reeds, but will likely go to something stronger. My WWBW wish list has already been hit up for Christmas by somebody, so when the box of Vandoren V12 3.5+ Bb reeds comes to me, I'll chop the end off one or two and see how they work.

What is the length of the barrel that comes with a Bundy? Is 45mm a relatively normal barrel length for a Bundy? I bought this instrument online a few years ago for cheap since it didn't come with a barrel. So, I have no original barrel to compare mine to. I know whatever works the best is the thing to go with, I'm just curious as to whether barrels that long are commonly used. I've seen a lot of "standard" length eefer barrels in the 41.5-43mm range (and nothing as long as a 45mm).

Mine is a Backun 40.5mm barrel. It plays great, and significantly improved overall intonation.

45mm sounds REALLY long to me....but eefer intonation is always tricky, so whatever works. As for reeds, I find anything softer than a 4 to be difficult to play in tune (it's just a little too flat -- and too much work/biting to correct -- in the upper register unless I use a #4 Van Doren).

Hope this helps....good luck!

FYI - Backun Eb barrels come in the following lengths:

40.5, 41.5, 42.5, 43 for Buffet, Yamaha and Leblanc

43, 44 and 45 for Selmer

Bundy is made by Selmer.

Hope this is helpful.

The original barrel on my Bundy is 40.5 mm. When I ordered a Scott barrel, that's what I got, though I have to pull it out a bit more the stock barrel.

The stock barrel (same plastic, same style of rings) of my Bundy is exactly 42mm.

Wait so for Leblanc Noblet it's 40mm? I thought 40.5mm? I could be wrong. My friend plays a 40.5. Should I do the same? I really want a Backun Tulipwood or Cocobolo Barrel! I don't want to spend $225 anyone know of any places having deals on such?

Thanks,

Chris L.

PS. Feel free to email me! Thanks!

My friend has a Noblet Eb with a 41mm barrel. My Noblet Artist Eb has a 41mm barrel. Good luck!

I don't remember the length of a stock Bundy barrel but I do remember having to make a longer one for a local school so that it would play in tune.

Eb barrel lengths can be all over the place, esp. when switching mouthpieces.
I have made super-long and super-short ones for the same model.
It gets worse when dealing with C-clarinets.

Also, a miniscule change in the barrel bore yields a load of difference in pitch and sound....even moreso than with Bb and A horns.

Overall, though, the eefers are less sensitive to what type of wood makes up their barrels (cocobolo, tulip, zebra, rubber, etc).

disclaimer.....I make and sell barrels, incl. Eb ones.

Last month, I acquired a 44mm Backun barrel for my Bundy (I especially like the cut-out to use Bb reeds without having to chop them). It seems to match up well with a refaced Vandoren B44 mouthpiece. I still have work to do, but I've made progress in getting the instrument to play relatively in tune with itself. I'm still deciding on reed strength (currently giving Vandoren 3.5+ a shot since I just got a box to try out on my Bb). I wish I had more opportunities to play it!
