So I am looking to get a new Eb clarinet mouthpiece and my current mouthpiece is the W.S. Sumner Acousticut #3... I know that this mouthpiece hasn't been made in over 25 years. They only made one tipe of these mouthpieces and I am thinking about buying a new one. I just called the guy that is in charge of Sumner and he says that these mouthpieces were more medium/open. My current Bb mouthpiece is the Giggliotti P34 which has a closed/short facing. I'm hoping to find an Eb mouthpiece that is similar to my Bb mpc, if not better! Another thing is my budget... I can probably go for a mouthpiece at most $250!
Mouthpieces I've have interest is Pomarico and maybe the Clark Fobe (but that is at the upper limit of my budget)...

I just bought a Pomarico crystal 1 for my Eb and have taken to it very well. The 0 is closer still so maybe try as many out as you can. The Pomarico crystals will come in way under your $250 limit.

Where did you buy it? I've been looking and all I've found is the 2.
Edit: You're from the UK! The only dealer that the Pomarico has in the US is in New York and they only have the 2. I could ask if they could possibly get their hands on the 0 or 1

I got a Fobes San Francisco off Ebay. Barely used for £59. Bargain! Exceptionally mellow and smooth and easy to control! :-)

As ever the "right" choice depends on the combination of mouthpiece, instrument, reed and your embouchure, so it's well worth testing a few alternatives side by side if you possibly can before committing. The good news is that price isn't necessarily a clear guide to suitability. I can endorse Paula's comments on the Fobes San Francisco (especially as I sold it to her!) - my favoured match with a Leblanc Concerto, also being sold as I can't really justify having a spare Eb. However, for my RC Prestige it was not my favourite. Depending on context I alternate between a Grabner, which offers me the richest all-round tone, and a McClune, which provides the most controlled altissimo. However, I'm keeping those, so no more bargains to be had there!

Using the same type facing on Bb and Eb is not necessary the answer because the response and intonation are so different. There are many good custom MPs on the market but you should at least try several different Vandorens, they actually make a very good Eb MP and there are several different facings. Contact your favorite mail order store, Muncy's, Weiner etc and have them send you up to four to try. They're also very affordable. Although I use an old Selmer C ** I don't know how they are these days. I do have a Vandoren as well. Try before you buy.

I will surely look around and try different mouthpieces! Thanks you guys for the input! I'm just a student that wants to continue in music (even though I'm not a music major)! I've been given the chance to play the Eb clarinet and I want the time I have with it the best

I play on a Vandoren B40 and LOVE it. Don't disregard Vandoren mouthpieces! All of them are great depending on your preference and you should definitely try them out.

The B40 and B44 are fairly open - the 5RV is the closest facing Vandoren Eb mouthpiece. I used to play on a B44 but found it tough going, so changed to a 5RV which was much better in the altissimo register for articulation and tuning stability.

I rotate between an old Vandoren 2RV (which I'm told is the same as a modern 5RV), a Hite, and a Fobes San Francisco. All of them work well, but have slightly different qualities...
If it's a solo or a piece where the eefer needs to stand out or play out, I really like the sound of the Fobes. If I'm trying to blend and be part of the section, I like the 2RV or the Hite. I can make any of the mouthpieces work for whatever occasion/piece/passage, but some things are just easier on one mouthpiece vs. the other.

Thanks Hurstfarm! I am very pleased with the Fobes. I still also have my 1930s wooden mouthpiece which is very different and 'meatier' if that makes sense. I am good in the altissimo on the Fobes up to Bb but I can get right up to altissimo C on my wooden mouthpiece. So as others have said it is useful to have different mouthpieces to suit the feel/sound and technical demands of various pieces.
