Hi,
Does anybody have information in regards to the bore diameter of the fritz Wurlitzer reform boehm?
I know that early models had diameter of 15.2mm in the upper joint entrance, what happened through the years?

Hi Rafi,
IMO, the only way to really know the answer to your question would be to get your hands on a large sample of Fritz Wurlitzer R-Bs from over the course of his career and measure them. As you know, that's not easy!
My Fritz R-B Bb dates from 1951 and is 15mm. That makes one. Good luck finding the others!

Both of mine have 7 rings, which is a good thing (I can't stand being without the 7th ring--I use the fork Bb/Eb constantly--whether in jazz or Brahms).
Do you have a Fritz R-B now? I seem to remember that you are the proud owner of a Fritz German system set...those must be beautiful.

Yes,
I own a vintage pair (from the 1930's)of Shmidt-Kolbe and they are amazing but the fingering is strange especially for a boehm player, they are large bore with 15.2mm and up.
I use my H. Wurlitzers 185 as my primary instruments but they are still in the breaking in phase.
I was just wandering on the differences between bore diameters and their effect in sound.
With the H wurlitzers I did some comparisons in regards to bore diameters and sound with some of the players here, (I tried and compared instruments from 1971, 1984, 1994) so I know. My teacher have a pair of FW from 1960's and they are lovely, (I still like my 185, but I am not that objective) any way they have bore diameter of app. 14.7mm, less then 15mm for sure.

Fritz Wurlitzer has changed the diameter of his soloist models (Schmidt-Kolbe, Reform Boehm and Oehler system) throughout his whole career, of course in little steps but with significant differences in sound character, place and dimension of holes, keywork and matching mouthpieces.
The trend by the mentioned modells (A and B-flat instruments) was from very wide (15,2 mm) at the pre War instruments via 15,0 in the fiftees till 14,7mm in the sixtees and beginning of the seventees. The demand for smaller bores, initiated by Robert Carrée of Buffet Crampon in 1950, led to an adaption by some of the German makers. This demand was also based on the wish to blend better with the smaller tone of e.g. the oboes in the orchestras. (wide bored clarinets have a very big sound)
I will give you some exact dimensions from some matched pairs (B-flat/ A) instruments from Fritz Wurlitzer and from some other German brands from my collection:
All diameters measured in the lower part of the upper joint:
Reform-Boehm Pre-war: B-flat: 15,20 mm ; A: 15,10 mm
Oehler system 1948:B-flat: 14,85 mm ; A: 15,03 mm
Schmidt-Kolbe system 1953: B-flat: 15,03 mm ; A: 15,00 mm
Reform-Boehm 1964: B-flat: 14,70 ; A: 14,85 mm
Please consider that the trend as stated above is valid for FW clarinets. Be aware that in the prewar period not only wide bored soloist clarinets were built:
Famous brands in those times were:
Oehler system 1929: B-flat: 14,75 mm ; A: 14,70 mm (by Oskar Oehler himself)
Oehler system 1943: B-flat: 14,65 mm ; A: 14,65 mm. (by F.A. Uebel, this modell also used by L. Warschweski)
I'm sorry for the long list of data, maybe only interesting for a small public.
Far more interesting would it be to to demonstrate the difference in key design and sound characteristics for all mentioned modells, unfortunately not within the possibilities!
One tip: listen to the different CD recordings of Luigi Magistrelli, he plays some comparable modells (and systems!) as mentioned above. FW reform-Boehm (sixtees), Oehler system: Warschweski and Uebel.

Thank you for such an informative post. It's rare to have access to this sort of information, especially living in the US. If you have any more information of the same type, I'd be very grateful to learn more.
Your post above is a "keeper" for me personally. Thanks to you and Luigi Magistrelli, we actually have some means to look at the larger picture of FW's clarinets.
