If you play a C on the clarinet, the tuner should register A# or Bb if it's in Bb - if it's an A clarinet, the played C will register as A on the tuner.

Use C on any clarinet and the tuner will say what the concert pitch note is and consequently the pitch of that particular instrument.

I recently purchased a Boosey and Hawkes Symphony 1010 and noticed that the spacing between the pad cup and the first ring on the lower joint was the same distance as the Buffet R13 A clarinet so I thought perhaps the seller did not know what they were selling but it turned out to be a Bb. I really appreciate the help.

Of course the A clarine is longer than the Bb. As far as using a tuner, on the Bb clarinet you will need to play one step higher than the tuner shows in concert pitch. You play a C it shows Bb, you play a D, it shows a C, you play a G it shows an F, etc. If it's an A clarinet it will show a minor 3nd lower on the tune, your C will show an A etc.

Try calling it from another room "Ay! ay!" and if it comes to you then it's obviously a Bb clarinet because everyone knows A clarinets are deaf.

If it's deaf it'll say 'Eh?'

In that case it will be an "E" clarinet.

Chris, it will only reply so if it's a Canadian instrument!
