After further research and consulting with the experts on this forum this is positively a prototype 1954 R16 3/4. I have completed the restoration and it plays superbly in every way. I wonder if this is a collectible due to the fact that it is probably one of a couple or even the only one of its kind.

My Buffet full Boehm will never look as good as that! Not unless I spend a small fortune on bringing it back to its former glory.
The top joint had been pinned years ago as it split down the front and back and had been sanded down an polished within an inch of its life. I've since carbon fibre banded the top joint in four places and tidied it all up, but the logo has nearly been oblitterated by the previous crack repairs done to it. The keywork plating is worn out but can be replated (in silver instead of nickel) - but I don't know if I'm willing to spend too much if anything on it. I might do one day.
