 Ligature for Legere reeds
Author: Dino
Date:   2012-12-16 13:43

I recently developed a cane reed allergy and had to switch to plastic reeds. I used Vandoren Optimum ligature with cane reeds, but it doesn't work with Legere. I am currently using Rovner Mark III and would like to know what ligatures others are using with Legere.

Also, I'd like to try Forestone reeds. Does someone know how to compare the strength of these reeds to Legere or cane reeds? The comparison chart on their website wasn't very helpful.

Thanks, Dino

For synthetic reeds I found Velcro to be most satisfactory. I could move the reed a small amount on the mp readily and easely without adjusting the ligature. . I posted a means of making a Velcro ligature on the BB some years ago.

Just for a bit of illumination, could you describe how exactly the Optimum doesn't work?

I use Legere Signature with Hawkins model B or Fobes CWF mouthpiece. When I completely tighten the Optimum ligature, regardless of the plate, the reed is still very loose. It seems that Legere Signature reeds are thinner than cane reeds.

The Legere signatures are thinner than V12 's or Rico Reserve Classics. So I now use the Mark III? Rovner tightening it down ; I find the Signature 1/4 less than comparable Reserve Classics. My Optimum doesn't work on the Signatures---- not enough tightening possible. Hope that helps

I had the same problem with the Legere's being too thin. I put a mouthpiece patch opposite of the reed, but it still wasn't a good solution.

i too use rovner ligs. MKIII sometimes, but mostly i use the new Versa X. Good ligature.

Interresting hearing about the velcro though. I'll give that a shot over the next few weeks. I keep velcro for emergencies when someone forgets their ligature, but I'll try it out.

I find that Legere reeds work the BEST with Optimum ligatures. Both Bb and Bass. Of course, it's a combination of ligature, reed, and mouthpiece - I use Fobes Nova mouthpieces and a 3-1/2 Legere on my Bb and 3 Legere on my Bass. I'm still evaluating Forestone reeds -- seems I have to step up 1-1/2 strengths to get a similar feel.

On my mp (Borbeck) the Optimum works just fine with both "regular" Legeres and Signatures. Until I found the Optimum a couple years ago, my inverted Bonades worked great.

A stock two-screw works fine for me on soprano and bass although I'm using a Robert Vinson on soprano, which also works fine.

I use either a stock selmer 2-screw ligature or a reverse bonade. Both work well, the bonade is more secure.

The BG Duo ligature works very well with Legere reeds. It's a bit on the expensive side, but it is a good, solid ligature. I feel like I read somewhere that Guy Legere recommended the BG Duo for his reeds, but I can't seem to find where I read it.

The Rovner Dark 1R works very well also.

I've tried a couple of different ones with Legere, but always seem to come back to the Vandoren Klassik string ligature. Seems to respond the best for me.

Ah, the Optimum tightening issue. An interesting configuration but limited as to how much tightening can be done. It's a shame really. I've had that problem with regular reeds on thinner mouthpieces.

The "solution" is the Vandoren Leather which is much more adjustable, less restrictive to the sound and has basically the same plate (the Bonade one that is).

Most other ligatures (no matter the design) should work well with Legere.

You can also add thickness to the mouthpiece (put a very thin mouthpiece patch on the opposite side of the mouthpiece where the ligature lays), or even just a strip of paper. Much like people who add thickness to a cork via paper or wax dental floss. Of course, this would be (in my opinion) weird as a longterm solution, but it is a way to make the ligature work if you're dead set on a ligature that is too big for a mouthpiece.

I remember the opposite problem a few times. Had a gigliotti mouthpiece which was one of the thickest mouthpieces I've ever had and couldn't find many ligatures that worked with it. That's when I ended up using velcro for a ligature for a while since I got tired of trying to find them. Then I found those leather ligatures (I stick with Rovner) that seem to fit everything. I even can (barely) use it on a thicker sax mouthpiece if I needed to.

Feadog79,
I'd like to try Vandoren Klassik string ligature but I am not sure how to place it. Would you explain me how to adjust it and tighten?
Thanks.
