In honor of what would have been Kalmen Opperman's 93rd birthday.
(December 8, 1919 – June 18, 2010)
"UN SEUL" for solo clarinet.
With his tough exterior, but really very sensitive soul, (from every whole note down to the 32nd notes) Kal worked me to #%&* on this piece before the performance.
We miss you Kal!
My performance at the 2005 International Clarinet Festival. Tokyo, Japan.

Tom -
Gorgeous performance. I love your sound, with resonance plus sweetness -- what Kal called the "oooo" (as in coo).
He had the liveliest, most sensitive mind of anyone I've met, about music and everything else. I think about him a lot, particularly when I play or write something good, wondering what he would say and what illuminating insight he would have in response.
We miss you Kal!

Thanks for your posts, Tom and Ken.
Kal was a true Renaissance man of the clarinet. I think it's safe to say that there's never been one person who was such a superb craftsman, superb teacher and superb musician at the same time. He has been my teacher since 1970 and continues to be even after his passing.
