 One-Breath Warm ups?
Author: P4sEnvy

Hey all!
I know this is kind of short notice, however I am auditioning for All-Region Band tomorrow in Lubbock!
We are allowed a one-breath warm up before playing our scales and etudes.
Any suggestion of a one breath warm up that will allow me to test me range and/or proper tonging?

Thanks!

If you've prepared well for the audition, you already have the range and tonguing under control. I suggest instead that at about 60 beats per minute, you play C4 [C4] mezzo forte with your very best tone, and slur up to C5 [C5], again, as beautifully as you can play it, with the smoothest possible slur. Then go on to D4 and D5, E4 and E5, F4 and F5, and G4 and G5.

This will help you get any nervousness under control and get your best tone into your ears. It will also impress the judges, who will hear that you care about good tone and intonation, rather than flashing fingers.

Play the audition selections slightly slower than your best speed. Moderate and even beats fast and sloppy every time. Count like crazy, and twice as hard during the rests. More auditions are lost because of shaky rhythm than for any other reason.

Good luck.

Thank you so much for your fast input!
I will try this warm-up, hopefully all is well tomorrow for my school and I.
I'm new to this website and the amount of help this is given is amazing.

Thank you all!

John

Make sure you play with confidence. Make the warmup robust....err on the side of forte playing.

Can you circular breathe? Then you could really confuse them :-)

Sadly I cannot, LOL.

However, I did get 5th chair for my first All-Region Tryouts.
