Ormandy/Philly Rach 2 recording principal clarinet?
Author: drews1949

Does anyone know who the principal clarinet was in the Ormandy/Philly Rachmaninoff Symphony 2 recording? I'm a big fan -- McLane, maybe?

Can you tell from whatever material you have (LP jacket, CD insert?) when the recording was made?

Gigliotti recorded it 4 times. I do not know if all were with Ormandy.
There might have been a Muti for good measure.
The Rach. favorites album I have w. Ormandy definitely has Gigliotti playing....he certainly lets you know he is there.

Probably Gigliotti, and well done. Some have trouble with the high note area three notes,

I agree, it probably is Gigliotti. McLane played, I think, into the 1951 season (just before my concert-attending years), so if it's an early Ormandy recording from the '40s, it would have predated Gigliotti. If it was made anytime from the '50s on, it was almost certainly Gigliotti.

According to an article by Douglas Miller which appeared in the February/March 1992 edition of The Clarinet, Ralph McLane did not record the Rachmaninoff Symphony #2 with the Philadelphia Orchestra. He recorded many other great works with significant clarinet parts but unfortunately not this one.

For a time, I corresponded with a wonderful guy named Clarence Beale, who knew a great deal about McLane and worked with Larry Guy on the McLane compilation. We had been discussing the soundtrack recording for "Louisiana Story," a Robert J Flaherty "documentary" for which the Phil. Orchestra had recorded Virgil Thomson's score. Mr. Beale wrote the following, which I'd think could be regarded as definitive as to McLane's final years with the Phila Orchestra:

"In April 1949 the Philadelphia Orchestra went on a tour. They gave two concerts in New Orleans. McLane became ill there. After the last New Orleans concert they traveled by train to Ann Arbor, Michigan. McLane went to the Mayo Clinic and was diagnosed with cancer. He immediately left the tour and went back to Philadelphia. Then on 10 May 1949 the orchestra made four recordings two of which are the Ravel Daphnis et Chloe Suite No. 2 and the Thomson Louisana Story. Did McLane play those sessions? I don't know. (Incidentally, after May 1949 Gigliotti played principal clarinet on most of the Philadelphia Orchestra recordings. McLane played the recordings made during the summer of 1950 and the Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique in the fall 1950. The rest were by Gigliotti. McLane died in February 1951.)"

By the way, the 10-inch LP of the "Louisiana Story" recording shows up on e-you-know-who every now and then. I never heard back from Mr. Beale about whether he thought the clarinetist was McLane or not, but to my ears, he is.

Just came across this passage in a different email from Mr. Beale, talking about Larry Guy's Boston Records McLane compilation:

"There are some items not on the CD worth hearing. I'm thinking now of the clarinet solo in the second movement of the Rachmaninov second piano concerto McLane made just before he died. The way McLane spins the air is simply fantastic. That is a very famous recording because the pianist was William Kappell."

So, if the recording you're asking about fits that description, and the pianist was Kappell, I'd say your guess is correct.

Ok, Rachmaninov Symphony no 2, Rach Piano Concerto no. 2, like whatever!!
Having re-read your original query a little more carefully, can't help you there. Hope the misc. info I posted will be useful if you ever do get curious about who played principal on the Phila Orch Kappell Rach no. 2 PIANO concerto.

Excuse me, time to go get my car's hair cut and get myself an oil change....no, wait...
