Are Eb Alto Clarinet Mouthpieces the Same Exact as Tenor Saxophone Mouthpieces?

Like could you take an Alto Clarinet mouthpiece and use it on a Tenor Sax or Vice-Versa?

You can always try but I don't think it'll work too well.

Alto sax reeds can be used on alto clarinet mouthpieces just as tenor sax reeds can be used on bass clarinet. I don't bother buying alto or bass clarinet specific reeds as I use alto and tenor sax ones instead. There's also more variety in sax reeds than alto and bass clarinet reeds.

not reeds, mouthpieces

Using an Eb Alto Clarinet Mouthpiece on a Tenor Sax then I guess using Tenor Sax Reeds.

No, you can't.

I know exactly what you said and I still don't think it'll work. As I originally said, you can always try but I don't think it'll work too well.

The bit where I mentioned reeds is a separate paragraph which explains what is interchangeable between saxes and clarinets. Reeds are interchangeable, but mouthpieces aren't.

If you've ever seen a saxophone mouthpiece before you'd realize that the cork is on the neck. Whereas on a clarinet mouthpiece the cork is on the mouthpiece.

So no. Even if internal dimensions were similar, even if intonation wouldn't go totally out of whack, you can't physically use the same mouthpiece on clarinet as saxophone.

As others have pointed out, the geometry is different. A clarinet mouthpiece fits into a tube as wide as it is, while a sax mouthpiece fits over a much smaller tube. That said, you could probably make some kind of adapter that would work, but it wouldn't work well because either the length or the internal volume of the contraption would be different than the sax designers had in mind. I would guess that a mouthpiece designer *could* make a hybrid mouthpiece/adapter that would work on both, but why would they? It's much simpler just to have two mouthpieces.

About a year back I saw a mouthpiece on EBay that was supposed to be usable on Bb clarinet and alto sax. I think it was made by Vandoren way way back, but I'm not sure of this. I posted a query on this forum about it but got no response. It appeared to have both external cork as per clt and a conical chamber opening as per sax mouthpiece.

A while back just for fun I used a conical Dremel to bore out a bit from the bottom of one of my old clarinet mouthpieces. I got it to fit fairly well on my alto but... I have so many alto mouthpieces already. Also, I didn't find the reed dimensions favorable for my playing.
