the band/orchestra question got me to thinking....why arent there any professional concert bands?...or is there? when i started i played in elementary band then moved on to h.s. band (our school didnt have an orchestra) then at college i was in concert band and orchestra but enjoyed band a lot more. once you leave the college level seems like there are only community bands or professional orchestras. does anyone know if there are pro bands?
thanks, jan

Depending on the definition of professional...I am a member of the Dayton Philharmonic Band. We perform (for union scale) in the summer in the Dayton area. It's paid work, but it's not a living. The *quality* is professional, and many of the members are also members of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra (also paid work, and also not really a living wage). Does that make us a professional band?

There are many, many military bands throughout the world, virtually all of them professional!

Not to mention the Dallas Wind Ensemble, conducted by Frederick Fennell and the Eastman Wind Ensemble, formerly conducted by Frederick Fennell.

Yes, the Dallas Wind Symphony and Eastman Wind Ensemble have made CDs. Either check your favorite online CD dealer and search for the name of the ensemble or for "Fennell" or go to your favorite music store that has a decent classical section and look under the famous conductors section for Frederick Fennell. I am sure there are also recordings by the better U.S. military bands.

Keith Bryon, renowned J. P. Sousa expert/impersonator also has his own full-time concert band and tours extensively performing for the general public and giving clincs to music educators and military bands...but guess what they only play.

Today, the lion's share of professional-quality concert bands where one can play full-time and actually make it a career are in the uniformed services from countries all over the world. For instance, a good deal of American military concert bands tour worldwide/regionally throughout the US promoting their respective service giving public relations concerts. Also, depending on their individual mission and budget they keep the genre alive and well recording traditional/contemporary band music...CDs/infomation is normally available free of charge through their organization's website.

Mark Custom Recording Service, INC. carries a lot of great college and professional band recordings (Concordia University Wind Symphony is great ;D ) the USAF Band out of Washington D.C. has a ton of recordings out that can be found online a lot (most aren't for sale, just recruiting and retainment purposes--but not to hard to get ahold of) as well as the President's Own Marine Band.

The Dallas Wind Symphony has its own web site with their CDs all listed. I've heard some of their stuff played on the local classical station and its VERY good. The Tokyo Koseo band has some fantastic stuff too! Their rendition of the National Emblem March is forever stuck in my noggin.

Well, I'm real disappointed that I missed Frederick Fennell and the Dallas Wind Symphony performance at the Meyerson Symphony Hall in Dallas last evening. It would have been the first concert of this type that I have attended. Then too, my teacher was playing there, which would have made it doubley nice.

Also, the Meyerson was designed by the world renowned architect I. M. Pei - an additional incentive, as I am an architect. However, you would think that as long as I've lived in Dallas, I would know how to get tickets to such an event. Hey, you can't know everything - right? Anyway I missed my opportunity. I phoned the Dallas Symphony ticket office and they told me that Star Tickets handled the tickets for DWS. Star said they had no listing for DWS (or any performance for 3/13) but they had a listing for Texas Wind Symphony to perform in April at Bass Hall in Ft. Worth. I tried other ticket agencies and no one seemed to know of a performance by DWS. ------- Anyone have a crying towel?

I'd classify the Army Bands as professional too. They're amongst the top bands in the country!

TITAS handles the tickets for the Dallas Wind Symphony. Also check the DWS.ORG web site for ticket info.

I play with Keith Brion's New Sousa Band on occasion, and I want to clarify something: we do not play concerts of all Sousa music. There are many people who have this miconception.
