I have this c clarinet from my great grandfather. It is in very good condition. The bell says - kohlert grazlitz bohemia serial #227415. Does anyone know the age and value. I also have a metal Bb Hoosier clarinet from Elkhart Indian.

The Kohlert dates from the 1920s. Is it Albert system or Boehm? If the former, it would have very little value (in the US, that is); if the latter, could be worth a few hundred dollars as it probably would play well after a good overhaul and C clarinets are hard to find and relatively pricey.

I do not know how to find out if it is a Boehm or Albert system. I used to play a Bb clarinet though. Could you tell me how to find out? Thank you for the information. This clarinet is in really good condition and so is the case. It has several reeds with it.

If you can post a photo of it on here, we'll be able to tell you more.

shy7154 -
The Albert design has 2 keys for the right little finger and a hole closed by a pad between the right index and middle finger holes. See http://www.trocadero.com/stores/allinsts/items/968191/item968191.html.
The Boehm design has 4 keys for the right little finger and no pad between the right index and middle finger holes. See http://wedgeradio.files.wordpress.com/2010/10/clarinet.png. The clarinet you used to play was almost certainly this design.
An Albert clarinet, even in the unusual key of C, will have only nominal value. Boehm C clarinets are in demand, and as David Spiegelthal says, will bring several hundred dollars in good condition. Note that "good condition" means more than clean and shiny. The pads must seal tight, and any cracks must be pinned. Also, any buyer will want to check the intonation carefully, as many C clarinets are badly out of tune.
I love my C clarinet, a Buffet made in 1929. On it, I play violin, oboe and flute parts in chamber music without the mental burden of transposing.

Thank you very much for the information. My clarinet is the Albert system. I will post a photo in a few days. Is there any way to tell the age by the serial number?
