There were some beautifully played clarinet solos in the movie "Lincoln." Anyone know who the soloist was?

Well, the music was performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, so I'm almost certain it was Stephen Williamson.

It was Stephen Williamson for sure. John Yeh was on contrabass clarinet with a whopping 6 notes.

It has always been my nsho that John Yeh should have been awarded the permanent principal clarinet position following the retirement of Larry Combs. Certainly, Stephen is a very good clarinetist, but not any better than John. He deserves more than "6 whopping notes" on a contrabass.

John Williams recently wrote a piece for him. Clarinet, Cello, Violin, and harp... Also, he didn't seem tore up about his six notes.

This made me smile. I live in Lincoln UK and for one brief and silly moment, thought the clarinet world had moved in next door ;-)

6 notes on a session is the best gig you can get! I wouldn't bemoan that in the slightest.

There was an early clarinet in the movie in one of the scenes. It had less keys and holes and I was impressed that they had the sense to show what the instruments of the time were really like.

John Yeh is an amazing musician and a class act through and through. He comes to work at the CSO consistently...and he seems thoroughly above the drama of the principal derby that took place -- he shows up and does his job with consistent excellence.
btw...I'm a CSO subscriber and have yet to see Williamson perform even once, although I continue to hear how great he is....I hope to have the chance to hear him sometime soon (although maybe I'll hear him when I see the movie "Lincoln").

I believe Charles West was the clarinet player who featured in the band scenes... I think he posted on facebook some details of the instrument featured....
(edit- yes, it was Charles West acting as the clarinet player, i'm not sure if he actually played any bits in the soundtrack, he states that the clarinet featured was a "Mueller system", and that the uniform details were researched and accurate)

Just saw "Lincoln", great movie! John Williams did a nice job capturing the Copland sound with the music (those open fourths and so on).

I suspect that a lot of people share your opinion. Unfortunately there are a lot of organizations that simply don't like to promote from within, especially for one of the top positions.
