I've had about 9 months experience playing clarinet, but it's been several years and it isn't my main instrument. I have a stowell wells schneider B3 mouthpiece and would like some suggestions for a reed that would be good for my exprience level. Also for curiosity what reed would a professional choose for this and what is your opinion of this mouthpiece?

Geez, that's a blast from the past for me. I had one in the 70's, a B2 if I remember correctly. For the B2 I was able to use my trusty Nr. 4 Vandorens (I tend to play more with more robust setups than most). Perhaps a nr. 3 or 2 1/2 may be best for nr 3 mouthpiece.
From what I remember the mouthpiece was quite responsive but it did tend to be more compact and (dare I say) shrill than others in my stable at the time.
Of course now I'm using a just-plain Wells (key-hole) that I seems to "hang the moon" ....... right now.

Far too many variables. Given your experience I'd buy a box of 3s and go up or down as necessary. I would say that most professionals play on a 3.5 or 4, whatever their reed brand or mouthpiece. Probably more 3.5 than anything else. There are always exceptions, of course. Variations in dental/muscular configuration and perception can make a setup that is too hard for one player too soft for the next, but I think the best-sounding cane is in the medium-ish strength reeds, and players adapt accordingly.

Hi,
I have several SWS B2s and use 3 to 3 1/2 VD or Rico Reserve reeds. The B2 is open and the B3 even more so. I had a couple of B3s and sold them to a clarinet friend in Indianapolis It would seem then that going softer with the B3 would be a good initial step.
I would categorize the sound I get on the SWS about the same as what I get on a Portnoy B2, big and assertive.
