Hi. I'm an adult beginner/intermediate player teaching myself to play clarinet using method books and Hal Leonard Jazz Play Along series books. I love classical music and was wondering if some of you veteran players can steer me toward some nice classical pieces to get started with? Thanks!

I'm not sure what the difference is between a concerto and an etude. I guess that shows my inexperience with classical music. However, that doesn't mean that I don't love the sound of classical music. When I put classical music on my streamed music channels, it sounds so beautiful. I just don't know where to start. It's like trying to take a sip of water from a fire hydrant.

There are a lot of good collections of transcriptions for clarinet (usually with piano accompaniment) of a variety of "famous" classical tunes. I'll check the arrangers/publishers tomorrow for you!
Usually that's a good way to start because the collections are typically (although not always) graded. (i.e. begin with simpler/easier things and then move to more challenging ones)
What method books/levels are you using so I can target my recommendations better?

I have always been fond of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto. This piece has some technical bits in it but is for the most part easy enough for less experienced players. There may be a lot of wincing at this suggestion from many "Boarders" because the musical side of the work is still being explored by the most advanced amongst us. But I don't see that as much as an obstacle for the beginner as much as it would be a dare !!!

Also try Mozart's Clarinet Quintet (may be more pricey to buy since it comes with the string parts as well).

Thanks for the replies. Right now I'm working with the Rubank method book and am just finishing up the first one. I'm practicing my scales (not all 12 keys yet, just up to 3 flats and 3 sharps) and listening and learning how various intervals sound when I play them. I'm also using several play-along jazz books to learn the melodies of many jazz standards. I want to add some classical music to my repertoire.

All righty, then...Here are my collections I own that I'd recommend at least looking at to see if you want to buy them based on the tunes they've got (arranged in order from easiest arrangements first):
"Solo Pieces for the Beginning Clarinetist" by Dr. Norman Heim (has arrangements for clarinet and piano of Chopin, Offenbach, Bach, etc.) Published by Mel Bay
"Famous Clarinet Favorites" compiled & arranged by Hugh M. Stuart (Has a few "famous" melodies by Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, etc., as well as lesser-known but relatively easy classical arrangements. Has piano accompaniment) Published by Boston Music Company
"Elementary Clarinet Solos" Edited by Jay Arnold. (Has a few folk-type melodies but many classical melodies arranged for clarinet and piano) Published by AMSCO Publications
"Solos for the Clarinet Player" selected & edited by Arthur H. Christmann (Has works adapted from baroque and classical repertoire for clarinet and piano as well as selected movements from actual classical pieces for clarinet too) Published by Schirmer/Hal Leonard dist.
