 single case with music compartment

I'm looking for a replacement case for a plastic student clarinet. I'm leaning toward either Protec or Gator. I don't want to spend a fortune on a case for an entry level clarinet. My son has middle school classmates that have cases with a compartment for their band book, and would like that feature if possible. I remember that was quite common when I was a kid, but the only such case I can find is the Protec carry-all which is both big and $100. Any suggestions? Music compartment aside, have teachers out there found particular budget cases to be better than others for middle schoolers?

This type of case is available from many companies and listed generally on amazon for the neighborhood of $50 delivered. Just go to Amazon and put in hard case carry all clarinet.

Not sure if you're replacing the case because of some deficiency... but if the case is structurally sound why not just keep it and buy a cover? That would give plenty of storage room and keep the weight down (supposing the current case is lightweight...)

Personally I like Alteri.. but that would be a bit of an investment for a middle-schooler...

Buy a backpack or laptop bag and put the case in the backpack/laptop bag. I keep mine in a backpack that was designed to hold a laptop. The clarinet in its buffet case fits in the main compartment, and the part sectioned off and padded for the laptop is where I put any music I'm bring with me, or (GASP!) a laptop if I'm going on a trip and want to bring my computer!

It fits music, and has tons of compartments for other stuff. I have screwdrivers in one side compartment, headphones in the other in case I find I have time to listen to music while traveling with the clarinet, reed case and spare mouthpiece/ligature in one compartment, pencils in their spots for a backpack, scale books, etude book, and blayman clarinet stand and peg.

And will be less expensive than something MARKETED for clarinets, and can be of higher quality depending on which backback you decide to buy.

Oh yeah, and it's accepted on every airline as carryon!

I second the recommendation to use a knapsack. Get a good quality one with at least 2 large compartments.

I use the larger compartment for music, as band folios can be quite tall, and the midsized one holds my clarinet case. I can keep swabs in the side pockets. Boxes of reeds, my tuner, a peg stand and other smaller things go in the front. When I have a lesson, I just toss the whole thing over one shoulder and head out the door.

Funny how old posts resurface. Regarding the Giardinelli case in the Musician's Friend link: how is the quality? I'm not familiar with the brand, but it looks like what my son requested. It is definitely closer to the price range I had in mind. To those suggesting laptop cases/briefcases as gig bags, I've been doing that with my personal single case for a while. I like the Lands End briefcase as it fits my orchestra fold. My middle-schooler wants a traditional case though.
