Eb on clarinet 1 Symphony Fantastique
Author: Eric V

Hi gang,

In Symphony Fantastique the Eb part is contained within the clarinet 1 part. Is the Eb part generally played by another player rather than by the principal?

Depends on the orchestra and, I suppose, the principal. When I've seen the Philadelphia Orchestra play it, the associate 1st, who is the designated Eb clarinetist, plays it. When I've done it with local orchestras as principal, I've played the Eb part myself.

Who plays it is usually determined by who is best at effer and/or economics--can the orchestra afford a separate (presumably better) clarinetist just for Eb. In my orchestra, the Principal player wanted to experiance playing it although we were both equally capable Eb players. I don't think there are any specific "rules" or traditional practices that dictate *who* plays that fun part.

Usually the orchestra's Eb clarinet player will play the part.

As my orchestra doesn't have a permanent Eb player and I'm the principal. I'm playing the entire part in the spring. :)

Most of the time, in a major orchestra, the Eb player will play it. If that player is also the assistant or associate they may play the first part as well depending on who's conducting. The principal conductor usually would want their principal to play the 1st part in this piece. If the 2nd player is the Eb player, as may be in a three person section, then the 1st and 2nd will switch parts so the second plays the Eb part. Rarely in a major ochestra, more than two players, will the principal also play the Eb part. So it boils down to the size of the section in most cases.

Whoever plays it needs to practice it! It's a blast to play and scary.
