Hi, I'm curious to know if clarinets (particularly alto or bass) made from smaller sub companies in china are any good? Or if they're even reliable? Does anyone have experience with these types of instruments and if so are they worth it?

Tom Ridenhour is the man to ask. A wonderful man. I think he's suppling a bass clarinet now and at a good price. I'm sure he puts extra work into them making his horns sound really good.

I second Ron, Give Tom a Call. His clarinets are well respected and are very affordable. Now an alto clarinet out of china I have not seen, and I think I would be sceptical of.

The best-playing alto and bass clarinets are not necessarily the most reliable, and vice-versa. The older Bundys are probably the sturdiest and most reliable low clarinets you can find, but don't play that well. In my opinion the Selmer 67 and Buffet 1193 are probably the best-playing bass clarinets, but will be more delicate and require more frequent adjustments than would a Bundy (not to mention 10-100 times more expensive to purchase!).
I've reviewed Tom Ridenour's Chinese-made/US-tweaked bass clarinet, search these pages for those observations. (And note the spelling of his name. ) I haven't tried any other Chinese-made bass clarinets, nor alto clarinets. Be wary.
