Hello all. I just recently bought a Greg Smith mouthpiece (Cicero Kaspar) and am looking for suggestions for different reeds to try out with it. I'm looking at vandoren 3s and v12 3s and 3.5s. Do you think those would be pretty good? I'm using Vandoren Rue Lepics on my Masters mouthpiece.

I have a Greg Smith Chedeville 1++ as a backup to my M30. For both mouthpieces I like the V-12 3.5's. Strength will vary from player to player, mouthpiece to mouthpiece, but I think the V-12's are still the best reed around. Fairly inconsistent from box to box, but honestly, I think every reed company is like that. You'll get more "v12s are the worst as far as consistency", but in my opinion, it's because they're the most used in the US, hence more people who love them, and more people who hate them. Regular vandoren "blue box" runs slightly harder than v12s. So a 3 in blue box would be around a 3.5 for v12, more or less.

Greg Smith suggests Vandoren V12 3.5 reeds for most of his mouthpieces. I was using this combination with his Chedeville style mouthpiece, but I have found even better results with the Rico Reserve Classic 3.5. Plus, the Ricos seem to be more consistent overall. Vandorens tend to vary in strength too much for my satisfaction.

No one can tell you what you need to use for any type mouthpiece, your'e different from anyone else. Just try a few different ones and go from there.
