I was asked to perform in a pit orchestra at a HS around my area....Guys and Dolls, for 3 performances. My question is what do you guys think is a fair amount of money to receive for playing in this type of ensmeble and all the practicing that will be involved?

I do the same thing in my area of the country (New Jersey). Over the past 5 years, I've gotten anything from $250.00 to $400.00. Probably a lot will have to do with the area of the country you're in and the budget of the HS. Also, If they hire a full orchestra, there's less money to go around.

You could also contact your local musicians' union to find out what the standard rate is for such jobs.

You don't tell us *how* you came to be asked/invited to do this.
The topic seems to tie in with the one about 'what's a pro'?
The questions I would first ask are:
Who is doing this? Is it a 'company' production at the HS? A HS performance (drama, performing arts, or...) - I mean, is the HS putting this on? Are you part of a 'core( corps/?/ ) group' of pros? Parent participation?
If it's a commercial production I feel you should charge the going union rate in your area for your services.
Personally, for a high school function, put on by the HS, for the HS (kids, parents, relatives and friends) - I wouldn't charge anything. I'd have as much fun doing it as they will... and happy they invited me  )
However, we don't know -all- the circumstances. How do you feel about it???

I am at a college and last year, the musicains only got $110- that included once a week rehearsals for two months, all of the dress rehearsals and 12 performances.
This year, we complained in BIG way and got $650.
Our arguement was that we didn't get any kind of credit and they were paying all of the non-students.
Good luck! Keep in mind that high schools usually have limited budgets and from experience, I know that they often just break even from doing musicals.

This is a musical being put on by a HS. I wouldn't normally care about money, except that this HS is about 40 minutes away from my house, and gas is, as we all know, expensive. I was asked to do this because the director needed people on clarinet, as he doesn't have a high quality clarinet section at his school. That's pretty much all there is to it.

The high school music departments I know about typically do not have the money to pay for this type of thing. I suggest you do it for love, not money - but you can ask them to cover your mileage and any other expenses. In return, you may have a great time watching and playing with the kids, it may lead to other paying gigs, you may receive lesson referrals, you'll have a good reference, etc.

Regardless of how much money you end up getting, have fun with Guys 'n Dolls. =)
My High School put that on last year and the book is tons of fun. Lots of stuff to do on clarinet.... we had some fun with it and made the salvation army band true to its reputation. =) Squeaking can be fun when intentional

Ask for the usuall price at the local musician union.
In Switzerland, the normal price is 100 $ for a rehearsal and 120 $ for a concert. The rehearsal or concert musn't be longer than 3 hours. otherwise it costs 15 $ extra every quarter of an hour.
If you are a qualified professional musician, you should be paid the normal amount. If you are an advanced amateur, I suggest you divide the value by 2/3.

I play for a lot of HS pit orchestras around NE Ohio, and the going rate around here is about $50 per show, with usually 2-3 rehearsals, which may or may not be paid. And have fun with Guys and Dolls - it's a great show.
