The players who's sound I admire the most are Harold Wright and Louis Cahuzac. There are many others with beautiful sound but when I heard their recordings for the first time, I immediately knew that their sound are the closest to what I always try to achieve. Of course this is very subjective, and there is no need for "sound beauty competition" at all.

Any "sound" that is in tune and in time. For me, it's more a question of what tambre is most appropriate for the performance--in other words, different tones for different tunes.

For example, Karl Leister would not sound "good" playing Anker Bilk's, "Stranger on the Shore", nor does Anker sound "good" playing Mozart. It's kind of like Pavrotti singing Sinatra tunes.

Really, any quality of sound will so if it is played with appropriate musical style and taste. What is actually "admired" is the performance, not the sound.

Some favorites:

For Jazz--

Artie Shaw (any recordings)

Pete Fountain (especially recordings from 1959-1964, albums like The Blues, French Quarter, Live at the Bateau Lounge)

Benny Goodman (especially recordings from 1935-1940, including the live Madhattan Room Broadcasts, Small Groups, Camel Caravan Broadcasts, etc)

For Classical--

Karl Leister, particularly his second set of Brahms Sonata recordings, and the Spohr Concerti. For orchestral playing, his playing (and the entire clarinet section) does illuminating work in the Karajan Ring Cycle.

Sabine Meyer, particularly her Weber recordings.

George Pieterson, particularly his Brahms Quintet and Messiaen.

That is how I understood it !

It is necessarily a subjective exercise and then the tastes and the preferences change.
Before,I especially liked a powerful, strong and resonant tone and not always homogeneous and accurate .
Today, i prefer a rich, and well centered tone rather intimate.

Question to MrJozzerBeast:

Do you mean ANDREW Marriner? Neville is a violinist and conductor, and Andrew is his son.
