 Symphony Orchestra Clarinetists Give Lessons?
Author: Tammy H

I moved about a year ago and also left my old private lesson teacher. Since then, the most I have been learning is what I get from my band director at school and my teacher over the phone when we occasionally call. He just told me that I should look up symphony orchestras in my area, find the clarinetists, and set up lessons with one of them.

This blew my mind. Do people with those types of careers actually give lessons? Are they only for great players or for amateurs as well?

And if so, how do I even come in contact with them? I would ask my band director but he promotes the overpriced not-so-great lessons given at the tiny fine arts department of my school.

Are there any colleges in your area? Call their music departments.

Many symphony players teach privately and in local music schools. You can find out who plays clarinet in nearby orchestras and whether they teach in a formal music school or college extension program through Google searches. Maybe your old teacher is familiar with one or more of the players near you. Once you know that much, choosing someone can be a little hit-or-miss. Many players teach at their homes because of greater flexibility in scheduling than school program often allows.

Because someone is a highly skilled player, it doesn't necessarily follow that they have equally strong teaching skills. During the first few lessons, both the student and the teacher should be evaluating each other to decide if the personalities and expectations of each fit those of the other.

Even the players in an orchestra like the Philadelphia Orchestra teach younger players - usually high school students but occasionally younger - who show promise and are willing to make the effort to practice. You may find some who won't take on non-university students. If so, move on to another.

Since I started playing again 9 years ago I've had 2 types of teachers. First, the principal clarinetist of a big city Canadian orchestra. He charged me $50 an hour but I am retired and could come during the day, during the week. His evenings and weekends were pretty booked up. Second I've been taking lessons from a retired university clarinet professor, he too charges me $50 per hour and I take 2 hour lessons given the 3 hour drive to get there. I took a few bass lessons from the local opera bass player and she charged me $50/hr. I've also had a couple of bad experiences and never went back, some charged me more, some about the same. Shop around and don't be afraid to pay for a trial lesson. How did I find these teachers, I emailed them out of blue after doing google searches.

A great teacher gives you answers to questions
you don't even know you should ask.

Yes, symphony players give lessons.
Most love to teach.
Also, they are soo undervalued by society that they earn peanuts. Most of the symphony folks I know give private lessons, and when able to make the arrangement work as faculty at near-by colleges and universities.

However - you have to work HARD if you're with a Symphony player.

Typically, time is at a premium, so there's not much willingness to work with a student who isn't working hard at their craft.

Same for University Professors. But with hard work, you can really progress quite quickly.
