Help me with this Buffet serial number
Author: DAVE

I went to the Buffet site and plugged in this number (414330) and I got the manufacture date but the type of clarinet is listed as "BCF1131NIG". What does that mean?

I get something similar when I punch in the serial number of my R13 Bb clarinet (409,xxx). The code that gets spit out for mine is BCF1131NI. I know what most of the code means:

The BC stands for Buffet Crampon
The 1131 stands for pitched in Bb and R13
The NI means nickle-plated keys

I never was able to find out what the F stood for. For your example, I've never seen NIG. NI is for nickle-plated keys and AG is for silver-plated keys. I've e-mailed Buffet numerous times about this to try to find out what the F means, but I've never gotten a response. I wasn't sure if maybe that meant I had a clarinet pitched at A442, but I believe the F is in the serial number if that's the case.

More input anybody?

Buffet's site is unreliable, particularly for recent instruments. The table here on Woodwind.org http://www.woodwind.org/clarinet/Equipment/HowOld/Buffet.html dates S/N 414330 to 1996. At the top, there's the notation that "A preceeding F in the serial number indicates a clarinet made for the European market (A=442, A=444)." I assume that the "F" in Buffet's response has the same meaning. Does the serial number on your clarinet have a preceding "F"?

Guy Chadash says that the only difference is that F clarinets have a barrel one millimeter shorter than the 440 instruments.

For mine, there is no F on the clarinet, just in what Buffet's web site spits out. Is that the same for you DAVE?

I'm not sure. This is a clarinet for a student that is available locally that I will go and have a look at this coming week. I was pretty sure it was an R13; just wanted to make sure.

"G" denotes Greenline.
