I recently had the pleasure of rehearsing and performing with Wenzel Fuchs, the Berlin Philharmonic principal clarinetist. He had graciously performed without compensation with the World Doctors Orchestra (http://www.world-doctors-orchestra.org/home) that I play in, concerts at the Berlin Philharmonie 10/14 and at the Essen Philharmonie 10/15, benefitting healthcare charities. Wenzel played the Mozart Concerto with our orchestra, attending long rehearsals for three days, travelling with us by train, and socializing with us after concerts.......a good deal of wine and beer was involved! Wenzel's playing was just astonishing, and left feeling like you just heard the way it's supposed to be played. He has a soft, compact sound that is remarkably even throughout all registers, and with impeccable intonation and articulation. He has dramatic dynamic control, leading to many of us calling him "Mr. Pianissimo". His interpretive playing was light and quick, using endless variations of articulation and dynamics to great effect, especially those pianissimos, and just the right amount of turns and passing notes. All the musicians and audience were just captivated and in awe. What can I say, it was so impressive. For an encore, he played Pagina D'Album by Mangani, a sweet piece that was quite a crowd pleaser. He provided string parts for the orchestra. Here's his youtube version with piano: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFvtZjxEgdc
Wenzel plays Wurlitzer German system clarinets and with a unique looking twisting tuning mechanism barrel. I didn't catch his make of mpc, but he plays about 50% on Legere Austrian synthetic reeds. I think he uses a Rovner style ligature.
We also worked with another star clarinetist, with Maria du Toit volunteering her time as woodwind sectional coach, helping us with Bruckner 7. She is the principal clarinetist of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra: http://www.mariadutoit.com
