 Buffet E11 France Issue
Author: tzamm

I just wanted to let you know about my experience with the Buffet E11 France and fin d out if anyone else experienced the same thing. We purchased
a Buffet E11 France in August 2012 a very reputable dealer for my high school aged daughter. This clarinet is known for its sound and its quality and my daughter was very excited to have one. Within a few weeks of her having the instrument, one of the posts lifted on the instrument rendering it unplayable. We took the clarinet back to the store and they were shocked that Buffet now just glues the posts instead of securing them with a threaded assembly. Further inspection revealed varying amounts of glue to hold the posts and some of the posts, I understand, could be pulled out easily because too little glue was used.
Needless to say, we switched to a different brand of clarinet. How could we
purchase a different Buffet E11 France knowing the manufacturing change/flaw that now exists with these clarinets. Who is to say the next one will not just lift out a year or so from now. I just wanted you to see if other customers had experienced the same thing. It is a shame
that such a fine instrument might now be questionable because the posts are glued instead of secured with a threaded assembly. Has anyone else run into this?

This is the first time I have heard of someone having an issue with the posts on an E-11 France. That being said I'm not surprised. There have been numerous threads here over the past few years deriding the apparently shoddy quality of the E-11 France. Several people have suggested that the old E-11 that was made in Germany by Schreiber was a better clarinet.

I wondered how long it would be before these pillars (and the way they're mounted) would cause trouble.

Shades of Heinken and "sonically welded" posts (?).

Very interesting information, Tzamm.

On Buffet's other clarinets that are "between" the E-11 and R-13 (E-13 etc.), are the posts also glued on?

Only the E11 France has these glued in pillars - the German E11 (and B12) has screwed in pillars as does the E13 and C12.

I have the old Buffet E11 and I can confirm that the posts are screwed in.

I suspected problems when I first saw this method of mounting the posts )Buffet's advertisement showed it) and seeing several problematic ones confirmed it. Yes, a major issue IMO. I'm wondering if they are tight enough so when they put them there is trapped air pressure trying to force the post out. When I had to reglue one I needed to create an "escape route" for the air to be able to make sure the gluing was reliable.

This is one os several problems I consistenly see on E11 France clarinets which makes me not recommend it.
